Dd1 (nearly 6) wants some Hair Crimpers for Christmas. She says she wants wavy hair. I don't really want to do that to her hair as I think it could ruin it. I suggested putting it in plaits over night to create the same effect, but she was having none of it. Is it a good idea to do this to a young childs hair? Or am I worrying for no reason?

I wouldn't. I'd just say no and that's that. Plaiting is a good alternative imo.

She won't hate you forever!

Gosh my dd is nearly 6 too and very into prettifying herself. How come she hasn't heard of crimpers yet?

Anyway, no I wouldn't buy them for her. I do plait my dd's hair and the effect is very pretty IMO (and hers).

What about ragging it - my mums used to do this for me many moons ago before school photographs etc and i loved it.

SpringCrimboTurkey · 06/12/2005 12:16

mums ? I only have one ! My mum used to do this for me many moons ago ........

ooh, yes i used to have rags in my hair, it was beautiful. then you get to choose whether to keep the ringlets or brush them into curls. my friend was just saing at the weekend she used to be really jealous of my ringlets.

does she actually know what crimpers are and how they work? it is pretty dull doing it.

theBomperandtheIvy · 06/12/2005 12:45

oooh that sounds interesting, how do you do 'ragging'?

OP posts:

i started typing out instructions but they really didnt make any sense. this might be better

Melly · 06/12/2005 13:50

no, another vote here for not letting her have crimpers, plating or something similar is much kinder to the hair.
Hope she is not not too disappointed

NotQuiteCockney · 06/12/2005 13:51

Aren't hair crimpers heated? I'd worry about my child burning themselves on them, as well as the hair damage issue.

Twiglett · 06/12/2005 13:52

no way

oh blimey, ds who is six has asked for loads of things which are inappropriate (mobile phone, T.V. and playstation, robosapien etc.) I just say "We'll have to see what Father Christmas brings" and leave it at that.

Chances are she'll forget about them when she opens her pressies anyway.
