Ideas needed for minibus fundraising

Help-I need some help! I work with SN kids and I didn't post on that thread because everyone with SN kids will go there and those without won't so I've come on here. I work with all ages of SN kids from 3 to about 12 and I do music with them. Because I'm nosey, I asked why it was the Reception kids got to go out every week and the older kids (who are mostly in wheelchairs) didn't. I was really shocked to find out (and call me naive) but it was because they don't have a minibus that takes wheelchairs. The kids need to be wheeled on and off the bus, because none of them can sit in an ordinary seat. They basically have to have an empty bus with fastenings that fix the wheelcairs to the floor. Each child has to have one to one help, so that means another minibus with helpers in it. Apparantly, the ring and ride service, which is free for old people, charges about £130 a time for the service and last time they use it arrived two hours late and they only had two hours out in total. Does anyone know anyone who works/OWNS Rover, similar places and could help? I would be so grateful for any idea. I used to work for a charity called SENSE, and helped start it up, so I know how to go through the Grant Book, which lists all grants available to various charities, but I know mumsnetters are full of ideas and this might be quicker. I can't believe that these kids, who would be chuffed at going out, even though they couldn't verbalise it, can't go out becuase of this! Help needed mums/dads/etc.. Many thanks!

Coddy (blushing) thanks but my kids don't. "Mummy, are you still on Mumsnet?" and now my oldest one (13) has twigged that you need a password and is frantically trying to work mine out! That's only because I stopped him reading the thread about sex and he called me boring!Oh well, time to put No 4 to bed. He's late tonight and grumpy and Dh has gone out to get No 3 from Girls Brigade, so I'm hoping to do the goodnight routine in 13 minutes flat! Teeth, wee, million drinks of water, loads of sloppy kisses and at least 4 "I love you Mummy". Aah...until I then hear "MUM..!" "WHAT?!" "NOTHING.." "Ok, darling, Goodnight, I love you loads xxxxx" Silence......
"MUM," and so on until said mother cracks and shouts "Oh for Gods's sake, shut up and go to sleep!!!"
...."I love you, Mum.."

By the way, he's five next week, at school and his teacher told me today that every so often he comes up and gives her a hug, just a little hug and walks off. Well that was it, you know when your period's due, you've had a stressful day and the cat's 16 and looking decidely rough....I welled up and had to leave rather quickly.

Oh well, off to bed for No 4..BLESS!

Where are you JM so we can try and offer help.

fio2 · 16/10/2003 20:06

Where do you live JM? My dd has SN and her sn nursery are taking part in a scheme at the mo to try and get or raise funds for a minibus - its run by the Express and Star newspaper, dont know if thats any help

Jollymum · 16/10/2003 20:53

Thanks for posting Loobie and Fio 2-I live in West Midlands. I just can't believe that a SN school doesn't have an appropriate minibus! OK if it was an ordinary school, yes, I would expect the PTA or whoever to be fundraising but this is like having a tennis courts and racquets but no bl..dy balls! Thanks for answering....

What about if you get in touch with your local newspaper(s)? Surely they'd do a story about it and then someone would be bound to offer help (if only for the publicity). There's usually loads of businesses that like to help out with things like that just so that they can go on and on about how great they are to the community.

the usual grant applications as you have said (including the lottery) but also be really cheeky, find out who is "famous" and might have an interest then write to them to sponser you. You never know cheek might win through. Your local MP. Ask the local paper if they would sponsor the scheme.
Not much but good luck
