Getting desperate - dh now back into cycling. Any ideas, anyone? Particularly, does anyone know any organisation that runs "how to look after your bike" days?

Why not buy a cycling magazine? DH gets tons of them and there's always stuff in there, esp the Xmas ones. I also have a friend whose company sells very posh, very nice cycling gear. Can't quite remember the spelling but its something like Rappha or Raffa or Rapha..... They have a very good reputation, plug plug.

Magazine subscription
Set of specialist brushes to wash the bike. Try your bike shop.
New handle bar grips.
Thermal vest.
Thermal long johns.
Funky "named" biking T - shirt, if he is a mountian biker.
New water bottle.
One of those fab CAMEL thingies, that they carry on their back for verrrry long trips to stop dehydration.

Can you tell i am in love with a cyclist

I bought my brother a copy of a book tracking the path of the Tour de France by Tim Moore, which he rather enjoyed

kalex · 04/12/2005 18:34

What kind of biking does he do?

Blandmum · 04/12/2005 18:35

this is the book, rather funny too

Hat to wear under the helmet - essential in cold weather if he is a bit thin on top like my dp.
Bike cleaning gear - MuckOff is a good one.

katierocket · 04/12/2005 18:37

my DP has requested
these panniers
but have a look through the cycle bit of the site because you might spot something else.

He just likes disappearing off on his bike - we live near Richmond Park and the river, so he does a lot of cycle path stuff.

Super duper pump. They are very good. Speak to your bike shop man. Expensive but worth it.

kalex · 04/12/2005 18:55

What ind of bike does he have?
Sorry to ask all these questions but MB and RC really are two totally different breeds.

NorwegianFir2 · 04/12/2005 20:45

MB with suspension - Marin. Just got it as his old one was pretty knackered.

If you live in London, enrol him in the London Cycling Campaign

hana · 05/12/2005 12:06

you can get little computer thingy that tracks how far you've gone, how fast etc etc, they clip onto handlebars ( quite small) not sure where you can get there here, I bought dh one in Canada last time we were there, a big hit

TurkeyGang · 05/12/2005 12:26

Sympathies - I am a long-standing cycling widow..

Dh is a passionate cyclist. There's always some bit or another arriving through the post for one of his beloved bikes.

It's made present buying a bit of a headache over the years bcause it always has to be a very specific thing if it's a mechanical bit for the bikes. A heartrate monitor is good - but again he knew which one he wanted.

A cycling magazine subscription is a great idea though - Cycling Weekly is dh's favourite, but there are others.

Also lycra clothing, sports thermal vests, ear warmers to wear under helmet, track mitts, socks are always popular. There are loads of web sites selling bike stuff.

merryTissmas · 05/12/2005 12:29

a reflective vest/ jacket? Shows you care about his safety. They really make a BIG difference to visibility.

MrsBadger · 05/12/2005 13:37

how to look after your bike days in London

or waterproof socks - SealSkinz are the biz

NorwegianFir2 · 05/12/2005 13:46

Great minds think alike - done a couple of the things mentioned but don't want to say anything more in case he snoops! Thank you!

I would say be very careful about buying technical stuff. He'll either already have it or will have VERY specific ideas about which one he wants. I'd stick to clothing, mag subscription, bike day etc. DH has a Colnago and Roberts....??? He told me he'd been lent the Roberts while the other one was being fixed. 6 months later I was still saying "aren't they kind letting you borrow it for so long.... aren't you going to take it back now you've got yours back" and I realised that he hadn't BORROWED it at all! I'm not usually so dumb

TurkeyGang · 05/12/2005 19:38

Lol Davros - your dh sounds EXACTLY like mine.

Bikes strangely materialising or bits of them arriving in the post. He is very fussy about all the correct parafanalia too

ScummyMummy · 05/12/2005 19:39

A bell?
You can get cool lights.
