A friend and I are going to sell at a car boot sale next Sat. Only problem is that neither of us have even been to one before!!

So I'm looking for tops tips, what sells, what doesn't, any tips for pricing or displaying stuff?

don't bother stickering or labelling. If you end up dropping prices it's a bugger. And people just look at the price and then walk off instead of asking you what your best price is.

KNOW what you want for things... and don't sell below it if the item is worthwhile. People will try and get you to sell stuff for stupid money. Don't be afraid to say no, or tell them to come back later to see if you still have it.

You'd be surprised at the things that sell... things you think are awful and you'd give away will get snapped up!

oh, and take a thermos of tea and some cake!

take several flasks of tea, or you'll spend all your takings at the snck van.

People will haggle on the cheapest of things. I did one not so long ago and a man was interested in a gardening book, which to be honest I'd never looked at. I asked for 50p he offered 25p, then left it?
A torch we went in total darkness and had to set up in the dark. Oh and be prepared for people going in your boot and boxes as you set up.

Agree that you will get the vultures as you set up. Usually traders or mad haggling bargin hunters. Best to have one setting up and one keeping watch and taking money for the early sales.

Don't get knocked down to early but don't be put off selling to traders, better sold than taking it home.

Make sure your table can take it, basic pasting tables are often seen giving way,

clear plastic or at least bin bags to cover stock if it rains,

or even better take your patio brolley and base and set up against the back of the table, put books and other things you don't want wet in the middle. keeps you dry too. Just watch the height you don't want to poke your customers in the eye.

Take a float and a pile of poly bags.

Wear loads of layers its gie chilly at 7 in the morning.

Did a very successful one last w/end. Top tips are

  1. Make sure its an indoor one, then people will come even if it rains
  2. Get there earlier than advertised, everyone wants to offload surplus this time of year, being turned away with a carload of stuff is soooo frustrating!
  3. Make sure everything is clean and presentable, a few hours spent wiping stuff over will result in more sales, no one will buy dusty grubby toys etc
  4. Have a good laugh along the way, and remember getting 50p for something is better than taking it home again!

BTW I would recommend pricing stuff even if you have to redo it later, having to ask the price puts some people off, it does me

well, it's a bit late now but I'm going to give one tip....

Don't do one in December because you'll freeze you tits off!

Hope you made lots of cash to make up for the cold.
