I only washed the front door because my step dad had been digging up my front garden and it was filthy. Hope that makes me seem more normal!

ninja · 15/10/2003 21:04

I think I'll go and look out that 'I'm a domestic slut' thread to make myself feel better - anyone care to join me?

codswallop · 15/10/2003 21:07

Hi Hughsie!

1When it looks dirty - I think the cleaner does it sometimes too.
2 When it is dirty
3 When the snot really is disreputable
4 Never. It has never crossed my mind! I painted it recently though.
5 My husband does it.
6 Er...never...don't the high temperatures make everything sterile anyway?? (insert hopeful emoticon here) Number of the Ovenu man, anyone?

Utka · 15/10/2003 21:28

I thought this thread was going to be about sex.

The comment about only cleaning the front door when nesting, puts me in mind of when I was just about to have dd. I actually went out and bought one of those Swiffer things, and dusted all the walls in our house. Since we had a victorian terrace with a huge hall and high ceilings, this took ages.

Have never used Swiffer since. DH keeps it as a reminder of how I got (he finds it a really amusing annecdote to tell friends...)

I also completely cleared out my spice rack and re-stocked it with all sorts of things I've not used (dd is now nearly 3!). What makes us do these strange things. I mean, it's not as if having a full spice rack is essential for the baby's birth, is it?!

Davros · 15/10/2003 21:55

Who said they are about to defrost their freezer? Mine needs doing very badly but I've put it off, first because I'm a lazy cow but second, because I'm scared of starting and finding it takes days and days and I'll wish I'd never started. If anyone's got experience (doesn't look like many here ) or advice I'd love to hear it before I get started. Once its done I'd like to rip it out and get a frost-free one.

waterbaby · 15/10/2003 21:56

Pickaxe Davros.

Davros · 15/10/2003 21:58

Can't use a pickaxe in case I inadvertently hack a limb of Amundsen who's in there somewhere

janh · 15/10/2003 22:23

Davros, excuse me if you know all this:

Empty your freezer as much as poss.
Have you got a really big coolbox? If not, borrow one (or 2 or however many).
Then turn the freezer onto freeze (or whatever yours calls it) for 24 hours with all the icepacks you own in there too.
Then put the icepacks into the coolbox/es for a couple of hours, and empty the freezer into it/them after that. (Put the icepacks on top of the frozen stuff.)
Fill casserole type dishes with boiling water, put them into the drawers/shelves, layer some newspapers on the bottom of the freezer and close the door on them. (I have a fairly new freezer and it has a little pipe at the bottom where you can tuck the top drawer under and catch all the water - you don't need the newspapers in this case.)
Keep topping up the casserole dishes with hot water and replace the newspapers as they become sodden. Attack the icefloes with a plastic scraper/spatula, knock chunks off and fling them in the sink.
The whole thing should only take a few hours. Once the ice has all gone wipe down the wet bits with eg kitchen roll/J cloth/sponge, turn freezer onto freeze again and leave it for an hour or 2. Then put frozen stuff back in.
It's great when it's done only I always find some bugger leaves the door ajar 2 days later and the whole thing ices up again!

Davros · 15/10/2003 22:30

janh, thanks so much! Seriously, I did need some advice! I hadn't even thought of putting in the casserole dishes with the hot water and was just going to turn it off and wait! I may attempt it tomorrow as I have a fairly free day (or I might have to spend all day on MN!).

Angiel · 15/10/2003 22:30

It was me who was about to defrost my freezer.

Everything Jan says sounds really sensible but I was going to speed the whole process up with a hairdryer. I think steam cleaners make the job a whole lot quicker as well.

Twink · 15/10/2003 22:37

Only going to admit anything here so I can answer Davros..

I do defrost my freezer but am ashamed at the rest of the list - dd came into our room the other day and said 'mummy it smells disgusting in here, has daddy farted ?' 'Must have' I replied before ripping off the bedding and sticking it on a hot wash, having worked out it was about 6 weeks since it last was changed...

To defrost freezer: take everything out that isn't iced-in and bung it in the fridge or cool box or wrap in newspaper.
Unplug freezer
Put a roasting tin full of boiling water on the top shelf and push the door almost shut. After about 10 minutes refill the tray and grab a spatula and start laying into the ice. If you put a towel on the bottom shelf it helps. After around half an hour you will have a wet, ice-free freezer. Dry it off (otherwise ice will form straight away) and plug back in, switch to fast freeze and put stuff back in.

PS I ALWAYS clean the loo before anyone visits (and at least weekly as well) and change the spare bed regularly, it's just ours that seems to get missed.. Oven gets cleaned once the smoke alarm goes off.

Twink · 15/10/2003 22:37

Should have known Jan would beat me to it !

janh · 15/10/2003 22:55

Twink, you notice I didn't answer any of the other questions???

Chinchilla · 15/10/2003 23:05

Mummysurfer - why did you start this? Now I feel like a total slut. I desperately need to do my ironing, clean my bathroom and mop the kitchen floor...I'm a disgusting housewife, and dh deserves better

bobthebaby · 16/10/2003 03:56
  1. clean the main loo - oh god, need to clean the loo so I know when the last time was!
  2. change your bed - mean to do it every week, ends up more like every 2.5 weeks
  3. change children's beds - Tuesdays and Fridays - has eczema so I am less of a domestic slut with his stuff.
  4. wash the front door - sorry are they washable?
  5. defrost freezer/fridge - self defrosting
  6. clean oven - see point 1) above
fio2 · 16/10/2003 07:44

  3. change children's beds .... once a week
  4. wash the front door ..... ????

waterbaby · 16/10/2003 08:53

I can't believe we live in a nation full of such dirty doors ()

whatsaname · 16/10/2003 08:57
  1. 2-3 times a week
  2. once a week
  3. once a week
  4. never
  5. defrosts itself
  6. twice a year (roughly)
Davros · 16/10/2003 09:13

I clean my front door about 4 times a year, often use baby wipe when returning home as that's when I notice it. As for the others:
loo - when needed + c 2x week
change bed - about eery 2.5 weeks
change children's beds - at least 1x week or more if accident
front door - as above
freezer - never until now
oven - hardly ever proper clean but wipe as we go, may consider ovenu man recommended on MN soon

Northerner · 16/10/2003 09:18
  1. clean the main loo - once a week and as needed in between
  2. change your bed - every 2 weeks
  3. change children's beds - every week
  4. wash the front door - surely the rain will wash it?!
  5. defrost freezer/fridge - self defrosting
  6. clean oven - twice a year
Bozza · 16/10/2003 09:58
  1. All 3 loos twice a week properly and a swich every time DS does a poo.
  2. Our bed once a fortnight.
  3. DS's bed once a fortnight unless as accident at nap time.
  4. Front door maybe twice a year with babywipe like Davros. Our front door does not get washed by rain because it is under shelter.
  5. Frost free fridge/freezer but clean it out properly maybe every 3/4 months. Freezer in garage, last Jan when we left door open. Took ages because so cold out there.
  6. Oven every 3/4 months. Needs doing NOW. SueW does that Lakeland stuff really work that well?
