My ds went to Downs on Ditchling Road excellent school and the other local school Balfour is also good People regularly move house for these schools and prices have rocketed as they are so goos as are the secondary schools. Not sure about Hove but there will be someone who will know

Most of the primary schools in the Brighton/Hove area are fairly good to be honest; it depends what you are looking for. DS1 went to Elm Grove which is now hugely popular and oversubscribed, but it is quite a traditional school that doesn't suit everyone. I was very pleased with it initially but withdrew him eventually as I thought it had become a victim of it's own success. In the same area I know lots of people who send their children to St. Luke's as it is perceived as being more "arty" and they are very happy with it. Queens Park primary is a very popular single entry school but you have to live very near to get in. Beware moving to get into these schools though as you may end up in the current secondary school "black hole"! St. Bernadette's on London Road in a very successful, popular Catholic school but you do have to be an active church goer (and your child/ren would have to have been baptised before they were two). Over by the dials Stanford is fine - I wasn't very impressed by the head when I looked around but that was a long time ago and I know they have a new head now. Friends who sent children there were happy with it. Davigdor infants/Somerhill juniors are good in the Hove area - again generally over-subscribed. Middle Streeet is probably the most ethnically diverse in a city which is, rather surprisingly, extremely white. Lots of people moving from London try and get their kids in there as it's more the mix they are used to - it's supposed to be a great school. As noddyholder has said Balfour is very popular, but there is an ongoing problem with the fact that there aren't enough spaces in juniors to accommodate everyone who wants to transfer from the infants - a couple of kids get "bumped" every year which obviously causes major grief. I'd better stop now!!!

DG - don't know how much emphasis you can put on them really but the new league tables are out today - you can find them on the bbc website.

Thanks for that.
Will investigate further, have three kids to get in to one School so not going to be easy.

How about websites for house rentals/Sales Agents?

diamondgeezer, I don't know how old your children are, but I phoned Brighton education dept a couple of weeks ago - I have 2 children to get into school, and it was an impossible situation! I could only find spaces in two separate schools for my 2. If you phone them they will tell you where there are currently spaces and then I suggest you find a property to fit in with that (you can only apply for a place once you have an address in Brighton). when I spoke to them they didn't know whether any children are moving out at the end of this term, so there could be more spaces then. Good luck.! (we are putting off our move until the summer now).

Snowydelight, I went to Elm Grove many, many years ago!

Diamondgeezer, my dd goes to West Hove. She is in year 5 now and we have never found a problem with the school. They are currently having a large extension built so might be more junior places available next year?

Of the ones I visisted and have experience of .... Stanford and Downs are both really good. I also love Middle Street which is very central. It has a small catchment area as it's in town.
I would love to have sent my kids there. It has a great vibe and close links with the city's art and music communities. If you wanted to live in town that would be the one to go for. If you want to be a bit further out go for Stanford or Downs. Balfour isn't bad either.

TBH you're spoilt for choice.

spidermama · 02/12/2005 20:33

Oh yes, and Davigdor.

diamondgeezer · 23/12/2005 10:52

I have narrowed the area down to Hove Park, this is supposed to be nice.
Which would be your top four or five Primary/Infant Schools and preschools in this area.
For kids of the age for Pre School, year one and year two?
