Like wazocks we bought cream soft leather sofa's last year (mad with 2 kids under 4!!) the cleaning stuff they gave us is rubbish and they're looking a bit grotty now. Would like to treat them to being clean for Xmas, any ideas?

Baby Wipes. I clean mine (brown though) once a week with DD's baby wipes and they come up a treat.

pfer · 30/11/2005 10:04

Yeah, been using them, but they don't get out in ingrained grott unless you press really hard and the leather's not responding well to being over wet and starting to crack a little where DS1 throws himself everyday to rest.

Are brown leather sofa practical? We are thinking about getting some but havelots of kids here and need to know if they will get trashed.

lucykate · 30/11/2005 10:07

i've always just used a damp cloth with a little bit of soap, the lanolin in baby wipes is good for the leather, ours is deep red though, not cream. the deep red hides a multitude of sins

pfer · 30/11/2005 10:08

Get dark as you can hard leather!! The kids have almost destroyed ours despite being told by the salesman that the leather will outlast us! Ours are cream soft leather - stupid, stupid, stupid. What were we thinking?

We have a pale leather sofa (not cream though) and it's fab. I do think leather is the most practical choice, those removable washable covers ones always look a bit shabby to me. I use leather upholstery cleaner for cars and if that doesn't work I use a baby wipe or 2.

jellyjelly · 30/11/2005 10:14

We have 4 kidshere as the state of our sofa now is terrible, we need something really tough.

So hard leather rather than soft then.

pfer · 30/11/2005 10:15

ndp i'' rummage in the shed later for the car cleaner. ta.

jelly, def imho. ours is soft and just not very durable.

Hmmm, I'm not sure which would be better to be honest. Mine is soft and is really quite flexible so doesn't crack and crease like I'd imagine harder more rigid leathers would.

munz · 30/11/2005 10:18

try the flash pads u just get them wet then clean then get wet and they come white again.

ours is cream it's what I use when I can be bothered! fialing that I use a toothbrush and sadle soap spray (ours is the really small grained italian leather thou) so anything else just leaves dirt in the grain.

NomDePlume · 30/11/2005 10:18

saddle soap is excellent. Cheap too.

Bomper · 30/11/2005 10:23

Another vote for Baby wipes, I have a cream leather sofa (yep I'm mad too, considering I have an 8 yr old, a 5 yr old and a 19 month!!) but they work a treat!!

pfer · 30/11/2005 10:29

munz - italian leatherhere too. everything makes it look grubby - even just thinking about sitting on it. Am going to tesco later so I'll get some flash thingys.

munz · 30/11/2005 10:31

lol I know pfer - ours is sooooooo grubby but it's huge so I don't clean it often! lol. def go with flash pads, failing that i'm afraid toothe brush jobby. lots of kitchen roll. (need a soft brush thou) well we do as ours is soft leather.

Kittypickle · 30/11/2005 10:33

A lakeland ecloth or whatever they are called.

MrsBadger · 30/11/2005 12:13

JJ, the harder the leather the better - and a traditional style will look better as it ages (that's my theory anyway).
We found here was cheaper than anywhere else but only if you want a really old-school one.

I normally clean it with leather wipes (Kiwi I think - meant for shoes bags etc) but will be using babywipes in future!

ladybuy · 09/10/2014 19:42

Hi,I have a brown one so dollar generals baby wipes work good on soft leather?

gamerchick · 09/10/2014 19:44

You have to feed leather settees or they'll dry out and crack eventually.

gamerchick · 09/10/2014 19:51

Nope must have chucked it.

You can get good leather cleaner.. spray it on and rub in with a cloth. Leave it a little while and give it an good buffing over with a dry microfibre cloth to get the excess. It gives your arms a good work out but brings them up lovely.
