How can I make dd's bedroom lighter

Dd's room is to dark, it always looks dark and dull.

Tje walls are sxy pink which is basically too dark, but we had to do it all this colour after dp made a complete mess of it all.

She has a disney princess border around the centre and beige carpet, pale pink curtains and lilac blind.

I originally wanted white furniture but had to get what I could afford and ended up with a dark beech colour which doesn't help at all.

How can I make it look lighter in there ??

Can you paint the furniture?

NutcrackingXmas · 29/11/2005 18:51

Nope unfortunatly not.

Mirrors to reflect any avaliable light

puff · 29/11/2005 18:52

I think repainting the walls is probably the cheapest way, although I know it's hassle

puff · 29/11/2005 18:52

What kind of lights have you got in there nutty?

chicagomum · 29/11/2005 18:53

Would it be possible to paint one or two of the walls cream? I did our dinning room with one wall deep deep burgundy but the other 3 cream. It gives a great effect but the cream walls make it feel lighter (it is at the back of the house so doesn't get sun).

NutcrackingXmas · 29/11/2005 18:53

OMG was hoping no one would say to repaint the walls.

Is there no other solution ???

She has just got her ceiling light with one of those white paper shades.

I was wondering about the lights because if you can't face repainting, could you but a lighting track with the halogen spotlights on that can be focused in different directions?

That might help, they are reasonably priced in places like B&Q.

NutcrackingXmas · 29/11/2005 18:58

Hmmm will have a think about that one.

Thought changing the blind to a paler colour might help !?

White duvet cover, take away the curtains

puff · 29/11/2005 19:01

Yes, possibly - you'd need to go for a v pale cream I'd have though. Matching the bedding to that colour might help too.

A big mirror on one wall would help as someone else mentioned, plus maybe some sparkly silvery scatter cushions - anything to reflect light really.

NutcrackingXmas · 29/11/2005 19:02

I think a white duvet cover would help yes, and also less cuddly toys.

She wanted a disney princess duvet cover b ut i think this will just make the whole thing worse.

Will search for a white one.

Also her bed is pine, would changing to silver or white metal help do you think ?

Would definitely suggest painting one wall a paler colour - it really doesn't have to be traumatic , lol, edges with a brush and then rollered! dd has flamingo pink walls in a very small room with Disney Princess border and duvet but has white frilly curtains and whitewashed furntiture which break it up. Otherwise framed pictures and/or mirror along the wall opposite the window may have a similar effect.

no doubt I'm a lone voice .. but its a bedroom .. isn't a natural darkness an advantage?

hub2dee · 29/11/2005 19:26

T's household is yet to enjoy the benefits of electricity. She surfs via a bicycle-powered generator thingy ya know.

NutcrackingXmas · 29/11/2005 19:26

Yeah Twiglett but it is annoying me now cos it looks weird.

All the other rooms are nice and bright when you walk in , but not dd's.

Will try suggestions and then see.

I have thighs like steel

LIZS · 29/11/2005 19:30

Which way does it face ? The north facing rooms in our house seem naturally more gloomy.

NutcrackingXmas · 29/11/2005 19:31

Haven't the faintest idea which way it faces, but lots of trees over look it.

We are not allowed to cut them either.
