I had a friend whose mum went to the school every year to "persuade" them to give her the best part assigned for that year (same play involving the whole first school every year). she was mary AND gabriel and all sorts.

she was Bob cratchitt as i recall. or maybe Mrs cratchitt.

weesaidie · 29/11/2005 20:00

Oh dear MB, that is not good news! Good luck.

Annoyingly the girl who played Mary has now randomly turned up on my uni course... if she out does me here too there will be hell to pay! No pun intended.

i would have given my left arm to be a narrator

Lonelymum · 29/11/2005 20:06

Don't remember doing a nativity at all! But I was big into the choir when older and always got large reading parts because I was not afriad to speak up and I had a high reading age.

weesaidie · 29/11/2005 20:08

Lol, SP, me too...

colditz · 29/11/2005 20:11

being narrator was rubbish. you didn't get a costume, you didn't get to pretend to have wings, you weren't supposed to join in "Away in a Manger!", If you were shy - nightmare, cos you had to stand up in front of everyone, but if you were extroverted - nightmare, because where, precisely, is the opportunity to do some showing off?

Nobody is looking at you because you aren't doing anything interesting, everyone is listening to you because apart from your own child, the only good thing about nativity plays is the snotty precocious little narrator screwing up the script.

Angeliz · 29/11/2005 20:12

I played Helen Keller once and this friend of mine with warts all over her hands had to feed me cold beans (till i kicked up such a fuss they turned into smarties, she said she was going to put her warty fingers in my mouth!!

DD is Mary this year,i can't wait!

spagblog · 29/11/2005 20:12

Angel!
Although in non nativity plays I was ALWAYS the narrator. I had a clear and posh sounding voice and could be relied on not to burst into tears or wave continuously at my family!

Angeliz · 29/11/2005 20:13

Sorry, that posting was totally innapropriate as you're all talking about Christmas nativities!!

I'l get me coat......

popsycalindisguise · 29/11/2005 20:14

my ds1 is convinced that he is mary in the nursery nativity..it is next wednesday...shall be watching with interest
he also said his little friend (a girl) is a character called roger
hmm

as for me, I was head angel twice but really wanted to be 'the mary'

popsycalindisguise · 29/11/2005 20:17

what is the funniest thing you have had to be???
oooh off to start a new thread...

weesaidie · 29/11/2005 20:24

colditz you are not listening.... I was a sheep... I crawled on the floor...

PS I know you were a cow, but you refused to be an angel and therefore only have yourself to blame!

JingEllBells · 29/11/2005 20:30

I had short hair and was therefore always a shepherd (just me and all the boys in the class). Longed to be an angel with the other girls, or Mary (vain hope). I'd have settled for Joseph if they insisted on the cross-dressing thing. But it was always the dressing gown and teatowel look for me.

frannyandzooey · 29/11/2005 20:42

Actually, as soon as I got old enough not to be cute anymore, I was the narrator too. Quiet enjoyed it, I like standing about telling everyone else what to do

TwoIfBySea · 29/11/2005 22:21

Now I am wondering what on Earth was going on at my primary as first I was a Christmas stocking then I ended up in the choir so all I did for the remaining 6 years was sing.

I do remember we did a weird winter Maypole in Primary 4 and we danced around it while Primary 5 sang that figgy pudding song. We had to do it in our barefeet and it was freezing but our teacher was a bitch anyway. I am glad no one had video cameras.

harpsiheraldangelssing · 30/11/2005 09:36

ah franny I am sure you're still cute

pinches franny's cheek and ruffles hair

Lizzylou · 30/11/2005 09:40

Mary, long dark hair...so typecast.
Was always the one chosen to do readings at Carol services and was very jealous that my friends got to eat sweets and gossip in the aisles whilst I had to sit next to the teachers at the front!

NomDePlume · 30/11/2005 09:44

I was mary, our school used to do it's nativity in front of 2 other schools too. I was about 8 and so nervousI spent most of the night before being sick and shaking like a sh*tting dog !!!

No wonder I'm a staunch non-believer now, really...

puddle · 30/11/2005 09:44

Well I was blonde and cute but i was the narrator too - was desperate to be Gabriel. And although Mary was the star part it generally went to the dimmest child in the class as there were no lines to say - you just had to sit and radiate goodness.

The worst part to get at my school was to be a Tree - they had to be wrapped up in currugated cardboard and stand swaying - one of them fainted from the heat and general over-excitement - "timber" shouted The Naughtiest Boy In The School

flamesparrow · 30/11/2005 09:44

Choir Alison was always the angel (pretty with blond curls )

Lakota · 30/11/2005 09:56

I was Mary (dark hair) when I was about 6. Joseph forgot his lines and my parents still remind me of the look of death I gave him, accompanied by an elbow in the ribs and a very loud stage whisper of "look Mary, there's an inn where we will be able to stay the night". Poor Joseph looked ever more petrified and I got ever more annoyed under my blue pillow case.
