Car Seats

Just after a bit of advice on car seats. Ds is just 5 months old, and he has outgrown his 0-9 months car seat. His head is at the top and feet well over the bottom. Anyway, the next size all says from 9 months onwards. I wouldn't worry about putting him in one if he could sit up but he can't yet. Anyone got any thoughts/suggestions on this?

Thanks

Britax do one that goes rear-facing and forward-facing. Think it's called the First Class?

Definitely wouldn't put him forward-facing till he's older - not good enough head control till they can sit up unaided for a good half hour.

A car seat guideline is all about weight. A stage 0+ car seat (eg Britax rockatot) is for up to 10kg in weight, ie what an average 1yo weighs.
It doesn?t matter if his feet are out of the bottom, the weight is the important thing. How much does he weigh?
I certainly wouldn?t put him in a stage 1 seat until he can sit up unaided. Rear-facign seats are safer anyway. DS2 was in his till he was about 14 mo.
If you are worried, Britaix did/do a thing called the Club Class which can go rearward facing from birth adn then front facing from 9-10 mo.

Your DS needs to be a certain weight and be able to sit up unaided for lengthy periods of times to be suitable for the next car seat really. Otherwise he isn't as protected in case of an accident.

I know it is tempting to move them earlier. Where does the top of the back come to on DS?

oh yes Hunker has posted same as me only she's a quicker typist, comes of doing all those subtitles lol

We had the same problem and had to get the Britax First Class, I think it's called so he could continue to go rear facing.

He weighs 18lb 4 oz (not sure what that is in kgs though)

I was told by the Graco man that sold us the car seat, that you need to get a new one when the head reaches the top, and not to worry about the feet. But now his head is at the top too. Also, now its winter and he has big coats on, it's quite tight on him. The straps are on the last setting so they won't go any bigger. Its alright for now, but can't see it lasting him any longer than about a month.

I definitely don't want to put him in the next seat if he's not ready. I just couldn't find one for the inbetween stage. I'll have a look at the first class one. Thanks

Definitley look at the ones that can be used from birth to 4 years then, and keep it rear faing for now.

PILs had the Bebe Confort for DD. She is now 3y7m and they have just replaced it as they managed to get the enext size up one for a good price,. Was a good chair and worth looking at this model IMO.

Im quite sure tou need a new one when they EYES reach the top rather than the head. the l;egs at the bottom doesnt matter at all!

You are right you child is too small to go in a forward facing car seat at the moment, and needs to be able to sit unaided before he sits forward facing.

The Britax first class is probably the only seat that you can get, so he can still be reaarward facing, but when he reaches 9kg AND can sit unaided then you can turn it round to be a forward facing seat until he is about 4 (or 18kg).

the advise is that abbies reallu SHOULD rear face until they are 1 year, (unless they reach 13kg first!)

hotmama1 · 28/11/2005 20:08

My understaning is that it is the head reaching the top that is the important thing - legs being long don't matter - IYSWIM. Shouldn't be forward facing until able to sit up etc, and should be rear-facing until 20LBs or at least 9 months. The rear/forwarding seat seems a ggod option.

until about 1 yr of age a babies neck can't support the head in asn accident.

The best solution as mentioned is another rear ward facing seat that at the right time you can use also facing forward.
