Just a quick question please. Just wondered how long you have to sterilise bottles for.

Cheers

I mean in terms of how old the baby is, not for 10 minutes say

Caligyulea · 28/11/2005 16:32

I did it up to about a year

troublesmummy · 28/11/2005 16:34

I thought about that, but my friend was told at 8 months to stop by her hv. Just wondered if there was a 'recommended' time

Thanks though. Think i'll just stick with a year at the mo

Some say you don't need to; I think the official NHS line is 6 months.

gloriainexcHELSIsdeo · 28/11/2005 16:54

I would say about six months. My dd had stopped using bottles though by about 10/11 months.

troublesmummy · 28/11/2005 16:57

Ooh hope so. The real reason why i'm asking is because my friend is pregnant, and ds will be 9 months by the time she has it, and i was going to offer her my steriliser to borrow.

Think it should be ok by then. After all, he'll be putting all sorts in his mouth by the then, i suppose sterilising bottles would be a bit silly

exactky.... once they start putting all the stuff in their mouths sterilising is poinless anyway!

yuo officialy can stop sterilising from 6 months, but i know of lots of healthy babies where parenstr have stopped sterilising at 3 or 4 months! they are still alive etc!

lunarx · 30/11/2005 22:03

we did it until about 7 months. at that time he was on the floor and putting things in his mouth anyway.....

mazzystar · 30/11/2005 22:07

do you have a dishwasher, cos you can just sling things in there.

i sterilised until a year, though in a more slapdash way from 6 months

hub2dee · 30/11/2005 22:38

mazzystar, do you like mazzystarr ?

mazzystar · 30/11/2005 23:15

the band? yes lots
but some people call me mazzy in rl and was low on imagination when signing in

hub2dee · 01/12/2005 07:36

LOL

Babydaze · 02/12/2005 00:20

I'v read a flyer the hv gave me saying should do it for 12mths. Seems a bit much to me.My dd is 6 mths & I will prob continue til shes about 9 mths old. My friend said she did it til her ds was 18MTHS!

IntergalacticTheRedNosedWalrus · 02/12/2005 03:54

I stopped at 6 months. I didn't see the point when I found DS licking the cat\kitchen floor.

Also, it's best not to put them in a dishwasher, as it won't remove all the milk particles. It's best to wash them in hot soapy water and rinse the throughtly, and then leave them to air dry

kiskidee · 02/12/2005 06:45

old sterilising thread

Pol25 · 02/12/2005 16:15

Reccommended time is now a year for bottles etc.. and 6mnths for bowls, spoons etc. I think

fruitful · 02/12/2005 16:27

UCH hospital advise parents of babies who are going home from neonatal intensive care, that there is no need to sterilise at all. Just wash very well in hot soapy water and air dry. Microbiologists agree. There's a thread by RTKangaMummy somewhere with a link.

They don't bother sterilising in America, either.

hub2dee · 02/12/2005 17:45

Still don't think that is current advice / guidelines from uch tbh... have you heard this recently ?

(I'm aware they don't sterilise in the US)

Redtartanlass · 02/12/2005 18:29

As per the old sterilising thread mentioned earlier here. I haven't sterlised at all!!

DD is now 6 weeks old.

hub2dee · 02/12/2005 18:48

Just re-read thread, it is clear that that consultant doesn't think it's needed.

fruitful · 02/12/2005 18:56

Here is the thread

RTKangaMummy has posted the email she got from UCH (in Sept 05 I think)

hub2dee · 02/12/2005 19:09

yep... just read...

If this is what the experts think I don't understand the rationale behind the current NHS guidelines...

fruitful · 02/12/2005 19:12

H2D - I know you've just read it, I was posting the link for everyone else .

There is a rationale behind NHS guidelines?

hub2dee · 02/12/2005 19:18

pmsl...

Sorry, all clear now... I thought the link further down was sufficient, see ? See ???

hub2dee · 02/12/2005 19:19

You mean it's the steriliser manufacturers who've given a minister a free sample or sommit ?
