On eurotunnel? It is much, much cheaper.

Sorry - meant to add. Does anyone know whether they check you use the return and ban you from buying tickets or anything?

Um.. no.

It's dishonest to buy a single when you want a return...

foundintranslation · 28/11/2005 13:06

don't really see why you shouldn't tbh. Have never understood why returns are often cheaper than singles.

SackAche · 28/11/2005 13:07

lol lummox! Of course not!

Stilltrue · 28/11/2005 13:07

Up to you I'd say; they should structure the fares differently if they want people travelling one way to buy an actual single ticket.

emkana · 28/11/2005 13:08

I always figure that you could have missed the return trip for a genuine reason like an accident or similar, so they can't really do anything about it. And they don't, I've done it before!

Lucycat · 28/11/2005 13:10

are you not returning to France then?

fairydust · 28/11/2005 13:10

I worked in rail for many yrs and we often recomened people did this - we also use to do what they call back to back tickets as they we're often even cheaper.

back to back are we're you use the return ticket outwards as it often works out cheaper.i.e you book thr outward journey for paris to london.

Hulababy · 28/11/2005 13:15

I have been recommended this before for both bus and rail travel by people working there, so can't see anything wrong with it at all.

bran · 28/11/2005 13:19

I know that airlines say in their small print that they reserve the right to charge you for the single if the return is cheaper but you don't use it, or if you back-to-back to save money, but I've never heard of it happening. I did back-to-back and used outward parts only of return tickets on the same airline for almost 3 years when dh was working Berlin and BA never said a word. I'm sure they have better things to do than track how people use tickets, and I'm sure Eurostar are the same.

lummox · 28/11/2005 13:20

Thanks all - won't feel bad about it then.

I certainly am coming back Lucycat (better quality of rioting in rural northern France than London ) but we're bringing back two cars - need to sell our right hand drive one. 15 year old lovely big boxy Volvo anyone?

There is a massive price difference in the two types of tickets. I can't work out why.

Take advantage of the 24 hour shopping experience too lummox! Tesco's shop til you drop!!

Mo2 · 28/11/2005 14:35

Just a word of warning - don't try to use 'back-to-back' system with cheap airline flights i.e. buy a cheap return, but plan to only use the return part, because you will find that many of them cancel the return if you don't sue the outward - also it says in the small print that you can't do this (at least does on BA)

Mo2 · 28/11/2005 14:37

Oh Bran - just saw your message! How strange - I know someone who WAS caught out by this!

janinlondon · 28/11/2005 15:28

Whoaaa! STOP! If you are going to do this, don't use a credit card or give out your address to them (which may be difficult). Apparently they can lawfully bill you for the full amount of a flexible single if you don't use the return. There were heaps of discussions on this last year but they have all fallen off the end of the websites I was looking at - messages too old.

aloha · 28/11/2005 15:28

Of course not!

Lio · 28/11/2005 15:36

No, if they have such nutty prices I say go for it.

Tanzie · 28/11/2005 22:03

JanInLondon is right - they can check with credit cards/licence plates and charge you the cost of a single. And they do.
