We finally have some money to replace the manky carpets that came with the house, yipee, Just wondered what would be the best thing to put on the floor of dd's room. She's 5 months now (and not yet in it) but is just normal carpet best or are there better options?

Wood! Wipe clean and warm. Add cheapie rugs for colour and they can be washed.

karndean - better than laminate

I'd vote for laminate - easy to clean, shows the dust (so no worries about latent carpet mites, and encouragement to keep it clean!), great for laying brio track down!

Tinker · 12/10/2003 12:27

Wooden floors definitely. The only room in my house with carpet is my bedroom and I suffer terribly from dust mite allergies.

Loobie · 12/10/2003 12:48

All my kads rooms have laminate down, its great in the boys room as they play play-do drawing and lots of other boy things(racing tracks etc)i have a big fluffy rug down on top of the laminate in dd's room as she is still a baby but at least the floor is done for when she is older and making as much mess as her brothers.Agree with the dust thing as oldest ds has asthma so getting rid of the carpet was great for his health

SoupDragon · 12/10/2003 13:46

Definitely laminate. Sick wipes straight off it, unlike carpet which stains and real wood boards which allow it to get stuck in the grooves

SoupDragon · 12/10/2003 13:46

We used to put a machine washable rug down for cosiness BTW.

CountessDracula · 12/10/2003 14:21

Beetroot we have carpet in the bedroom too. But it was here when we moved in and I think I will change for wood in dd's bedroom as it will just end up like the last one (covered in puke and calpol, smelly and nasty with loads of lighter patches where aforementioned puke and calpol scrubbed out)

We've just swapped carpet for sanded boards, and I'm very happy with it, for purposes of play, hygeine etc...but if we could have afforded it I might have had a solid wood floor down, as I do agree things get stuck in the cracks!

Good quality carpet. Easy to clean and cosy. Wooden floors are a devil for dust and are cold and quite frankly, getting very unfashionable. Or you could try Marmoleum, up-to-date lino, very easy to keep clean but expensive.

I'd just told dh laminate it was and now you're all disagreeing! But I do appreciate all your input - I do think it'll have to be easy to clean

TOYS AND CLOTHES - well our bedrooms are always covered in them

ninja · 12/10/2003 16:32

You're right Helen

I've always found carpet makes for a softer landing when they fall of the bed - as my 2 frequently seem to.

judetheobscure · 12/10/2003 20:28

Another vote for carpet unlesss they're particularly prone to sickie bugs.

Tom · 12/10/2003 20:32

Wood laminate (get real wood laminate, not plastic if you can afford it) and RUGS! Works perfick for us

Demented · 13/10/2003 15:05

Sanded boards and rugs here.
