I've just remembered these new maintenance checks on practical tests and don't know the answers, eg how do you check your brakes are working properly.
Dh not being much help as he suggested driving car at wall high speed would check brakes ha ha.
Ones I'm stuck on....
How do you check tyres have sufficient tread depth & gen condition is safe ?

How do you check power assisted steering is working?

How do you check handbrake for excessive wear?

In practice it's easy but what is the correct answer?

Oooooooh HELP PLEASE

Don't have a book in front of me so this mignt not be the >right< answers:
Tyres - check all (including spare) for obvious damage, tread depth (who knows the legal limit?), pressure (only accurate when cold), compatability of type (your manual should tell you which type you can have on the front and which on the back).

Handbrake: sorry no ideas - in practice we just keep an eye on how far up we have to pull it, and then adjust it if it gets too far.

To clarify:
'obvious damage' to tyres: long or deep cuts, bulges, lumps or tears.
'tread depth' - The legal minimum tread depth of the main grooves of car tyres is 1.6mm. This applies across the centre 3/4 of the width of tread and round the entire outer circumference of the tyre.
Most car type tyres have tread wear indicators, usually a number of small ribs across the bottom of the main tread grooves, and when the tread surface becomes level with these ribs the tyre needs to be replaced. Simple and cheap gauges are also available to give an acceptable guide to tread depth.

God, I don't know, I would fail if I had to take it tomorrow and I've been driving for years!

They'll only ask you one or 2 though won't they? Can you ring your DI tonight and ask for the answers to swot up for tomorrow?

mieow · 10/10/2003 21:42

1.6 is the legal depth.
Turn the wheel to check if the power steering is working.
and not sure on the other.
My instutor wentthough these with me just the other week

janh · 10/10/2003 22:21

Oh, is that all re power steering? If it isn't working the wheel won't turn at all! (Unless the car is moving). Every car doesn't have it though, do you still have to know?

Re the tread depth, can you use a coin? Not sure which coin but you shouldn't be able to see the milling round the edge or something?

WAHEY!! Fantastic news - well done! What an inspiration to us non-drivers. I've failed 3 times long time ago now. Maybe I should give it another go?

ANGELMOTHER · 11/10/2003 11:51

Never give up Kmg1 I started learning to drive 4 years ago, it's an expensive process but hugely worth it
