If you're said to be in a 'PollyAnna' mood, what does that actually mean?

I asked a couple of people and they don't know so can any of you help.
Have asked the person who used the line but not heard back.

TIA.

I would go with irritatingly chirpy and trying to help everyone... but Pollyanna bugged me

It could just be happy and helping people?

philippat · 24/11/2005 16:12

plot of pollyanna

optimistic in the face of adversity

Serendippity · 24/11/2005 16:12

Oooh ooh i kno this one i think. Pollyanna was the little girl in a film played by Hayley Mills. She always looked on the bright side of everything (sickeningly so sometimes ) was always in a bright happy mood and was always "glad".

I think that's what that saying means

cupcakes · 24/11/2005 16:12

Pollyanna was a little girl who was (cloyingly) sweet and always saw the best in people.

ThomCat · 24/11/2005 16:13

PMSL - irritatingly chirpy. Righto.

flamesparrow · 24/11/2005 16:13

Oooh, that sounds much better

hunkermunker · 24/11/2005 16:13

Here you go, TC - I loved it when I was little and occasionally reread it when I need a cheery book that won't give me nightmares!

There are plenty worse things to be called than Pollyanna, believe me. She was a sweetheart (as are you)

flamesparrow · 24/11/2005 16:14

I was responding to philippat then...

ThomCat · 24/11/2005 16:14

oh ok, am getting this now.

NomDePlume · 24/11/2005 16:14

I bit 'rose-tinted', perhaps.

ThomCat · 24/11/2005 16:15

No that's fine.
I'd rather be PollyAnna than a miserable old bag.
I'm happy to PollyAnna.

I've even read Pollyanna Grows Up - I love children's books

ThomCat · 24/11/2005 16:17

Cool, thanks girls, it was irritating not knowing what was meant. Understand now, thanks.

Lets all play the glad game!!!!!!

I'm glad I'm a sour, twisted bag.

flamesparrow · 24/11/2005 16:19

Is the book better than the film (I always want to shake Hayley Mills regardless of what film it is )?

I'm glad I'm way too blunt at times, and tell people they are irritatingly chirpy

ThomCat · 24/11/2005 16:20

okayyyyyyy, errrrr greeat, well I'm GLAD for you then.

OP posts:
flamesparrow · 24/11/2005 16:20

Realised after I'd written it that it would come across all wrong!

flamesparrow · 24/11/2005 16:21

pmsl - If I remember rightly, it is in the story... they all have to say what they are glad for to stop them being grumpy and miserable.

Kinda like raindrops on roses etc...

intergalacticwalrus · 24/11/2005 16:21

I think she was referring to mine!

I was trying to be funny, but as usual, I failed miserably....

ThomCat · 24/11/2005 16:22

LOL - flamesparrow - i wasn't talking to you mate, our posts crossed.

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 24/11/2005 16:22

i'm laughing now, walrus, if that helps ?!

intergalacticwalrus · 24/11/2005 16:23

Cheers NDP.

ThomCat · 24/11/2005 16:23

intergalacticwalrus - no, no, you're attempts at humour weren't that bad. I smiled, you didn't get a belly laugh, but I did smile.

hunkermunker · 24/11/2005 16:24

I know way too much about this book, having read it loads of times What can I say, I read fast

But you're not playing the game right, ladies - it's not about pointing out your faults and being glad for them (not quite!).

intergalacticwalrus · 24/11/2005 16:24

That's ok, I'll let you off.

I'm glad you found it mildly amusing!
