We have decided to 'give' our children for christmas a 'present' of a goat/chickens/cow/etc through one of the charities that gives people in africa livestock, fruit trees and the like. We already do the Christmas Charity boxes through school to "help Father Christmas with the presents for the children whose mummies and daddies are not as lucky as mine" as my 4 year old puts it.
In relative terms, we are incredibly lucky financially as a family and want to teach the children that not everybody (both in the UK and abroad) are so lucky. They don't really have a grasp of money so donating cash wouldn't have the same effect as something they could see/relate to such as a cow.
The thing is that we are non-religious to a point that no religion is our religion and I would prefer not to donate via a religious affliated charity such as send a cow or farm friends. Does anybody know of a similar organisation that is not alligned to a particular religion. We will go with one of the above if I can't find an alternative but would really prefer a non-demoninational charity.
All help/suggestions greatfully received.
Has anyone else done this? I would be interested to see how their children reacted.
Thanks
