Charities who take sofas????????

Hi
wondered if anyone knew of any charities that take sofas? WE have a 3 seater and 2 seater about 5 yrs old and good couches for someone who has nothing. I dont want to sell them as it will take too long. My mum has bought us new couches as xmas/having baby/bday presents which are going to arrive next week some time. Seems a shame to throw these ones away so thought a charity may benefit.

We had a charity come and collect a bed from us last year. They tookt hem away, no charge, and they refurnished them before passing them on, not reselling them, to people who needed them.

I actually got the contact numbers via MN. I will see if I can find the thread.

don't know of any charities specifically, but if you draw a blank there you could join your local freecycle group and someone wil take them off your hands!

Nemo1977 · 24/11/2005 12:18

i know our council dont collect them but will try oxfam.

They must have the fire safety tags on.

Near us, the Salvation Army have a furniture store, as do the British Heart Foundation. Something called the Evergreen Trust also take furniture. Have a look in the yellow pages - I'm sure I found the Heart FOundation took furniture that way.

I posted about this a while ago.

Try local colleges for upholstering classes, local hospice shops (ours has a furniture shop as well as the normal charity stores)

I tried the hospice shop who said they'd collect it but they could come on time for when we were having our new one delivered so we ended up paying £15 to have the council collect it.

I do want someone to benefit from them rather than resale as we are getting a treat so if it can help someone else would be a bonus. Dh just told me they are actually only 3 yrs old and do have fire tags on them still.

Phone your local council. In conjunction with local churches it organises a charity which takes old appliances and furniture, checks it and has a showroom for those who need replacements and are on low incomes can come along to. You pay a £5 donation per collection I think.

Otherwise try WRVS, Salvation Army, YMCA, local housing projects etc

Try a google search for recycling furniture and add your area name; it should bring up something.

We've just tried this with my Dad's stuff, phoned every charity in the book! Check that any stuff you want to get rid of has fire labels on them, sofas etc. No-one will legally take them for re-sale/donation without these. I was amazed that even the homeless people aren't allowed to take stuff. My Dad's table and chairs were perfect, would have been great for someone but because it was really old and with foam inside the seats, everyone told me they couldn't help!

Nemo1977 · 24/11/2005 12:58

Thanks all
oxfam are going to take them.
