Do you let older people get on a bus before you?

northerner · 23/11/2005 09:24

I got to the bustop at 7.30am this morning. There was an old lady already there, then 2 school boys arrived (about 14yrs) then a guy who looked about 19/20.

Anyway the bus arrived and pulled up nearer the group of males so they all piled on the bus first. I let teh old lady go before me but inseide was seething. My Mum always made me let older people on the bus first, and anyone who was at teh stop before me.

Is this a sign that noone has manners anymore?

No it's not a big issue really but it is one of my bugbears

No. I'm 9 months pregnant, tho.

Around here, the old people are aggro - using their sticks as batons to push their way up to the front of the queue. It's every man for himself.

suzywong · 23/11/2005 09:27

only if the older persons demonstrates the required amount of needines, servility and infirment

I don't think anyone has any manners when it comes to overcrowded public transport, Northerner.
I used to catch the Metrolink to work and it was such a scrum, even when I was 8 mths pg (and huge, so noone could miss it!) I was never offered a seat or let on the tram without a struggle.
This morning, for the 20th time a mother let the door slam to nursery "pretending" not to see me, pg, carrying DS and very obviously struggling.
I do think that "manners" are becoming increasingly obsolete.

oliveoil · 23/11/2005 09:29

yes, and I stand up and give them my seat.

I gave everyone at the front of the bus one of my special hard stares the other day as not one person sitting nearer than me would give their seat up.

I get annoyed at schoolkids pushing older people out of the way to get on the bus and always try to let them get on before me... BUT I get equally p'd off when I'm obviously pregnant, carrying a pram and ds and holding dd's hand struggling to get on and the old people barge their way on in front of you!!

I always let old people on first - and stand up for them. And i always, always give pregnant ladies my seat. I was astounded how few people let me sit down on crowded public transport when I was pregnant.

lucycinco · 23/11/2005 09:31

i do but in spain you have no choice, they just barge passed you or rugby tackle you out of the way. They are fierce Spanish old people and if you do manage to get on before them ,they heckle you the whole way home. Seriously though, i was brought up to let older people on the bus first. when in the Uk I found being pregnant didnt always guarantee you a seat on the bus.

oliveoil · 23/11/2005 09:32

then again, when I was pregnant, I always got a seat and people let me get on before them, but I always opened my coat and pushed my bump out to underline that I was with child!

Yes, I let old people and people with buggies, toddlers etc, and pregnant people on first.
VERY bad manners to pile in front of them.

Marina · 23/11/2005 09:41

It's not a "big" issue sure, Northerner, but offering this basic courtesy to older people, people with buggies etc makes life on public transport a bit less cutthroat. I always let them on/stand up for them (and round here you don't usually get so much as a thank you, which does make me ), and have been known to tweak toddler dd out of her buggy to fold it so that another mum with a small baby can also get on. And if feasible, ds gets to sit on my lap if the bus is crowded - talk about a dogpile...
And if someone does similar for me, I thank them. What does appall me is how few people - mums and oldsters alike in suburban London - say thanks. It'a almost like they're thinking SUCKER! LOSER!

Zephyrcat · 23/11/2005 09:46

I was quietly fuming on the bus the other day... If a 'low' bus comes so you don't have to fold the pram up, if there are already people on those seats I automatically fold the pram and sit ds on my knee. THe other day I got a seat and he was fast asleep. A woman and her mother got on with a dd in a big chunky pram and got in such a strop because the driver told her she had to fold it up and was giving me evils because she obviously thought that she had a right for a buggy space because she had a bigger pram!! (I know it's slightly off the issue but it's been bugging me!!!)

Jackstini · 23/11/2005 09:46

And more to the point Northener - you say the old lady was there first anyway - so everyone else pushed in the queue!
Lack of courtesy is something that just really makes me mad - as my Mum always used to say 'manners cost nothing - but they prove what you are worth'

tarantula · 23/11/2005 09:48

lol this is dp's worst bugbear (that and spitting) and he is more than happy to tell the little oiks exactly what he thinks of them and their manners/upbringing etc etc. Funnily enough he's never had an agressive reply and the kids tend to slink off shamefaced. Must be something to do with the way he looks.
I just tend to mutter sarky comments under my breath or ram them with the buggy

northerner · 23/11/2005 09:48

Manners maketh the man says my dh.

'As far as old people go in this country, I have mixed feelings. Some old people go around with a chip on their shoulder thinking they can jump the queue everywhere just because they're old and I think that's not on. At a bus stop I always let those who were there before me get on the bus before me. '

Here, here!

mummytosteven · 23/11/2005 10:02

i usually let everyone else on first because I've got a buggy anyway!

what drives me crazy on a related topic, is when people try and get on the train before everyone getting off has managed to get off. grrr.
