Detergent - cleanliness is next to godliness after all! But surely it would be essential to keep the germs at bay and prevent illness (am I turning into my mother here, or what??!!)

No, that's a good point, Lizzer. Also, perhaps Dettox (or Disinfectant? I know we wanted to avoid brand names - oops) because a small cut if not cleaned up properly can eventually go all manky & kill you, can't it? (Gangrene or whatever). I wouldn't want to survive Nuclear war only to die from a cut I got slicing cheese!!!

Joe · 17/10/2001 12:21

Deodrant nothing worse than BO.

Lizzer · 17/10/2001 16:26

LOL Littlejo! It would definitely be my luck if that happened, "Help I'm dying, I dropped the champagne bottle on my toe and now it's rotting away!"

Joe - v v good idea, it's always the simple things you forget aswell, isn't it?!

Chairmum · 17/10/2001 17:56

Or maybe 'D' should be for dirt. My mother-in-law says we are all far too clean today and that a good layer of dirt keeps the germs out. I haven't decided to test her theory, you may be pleased to know!

It's Evident that we should Evaluate the Exits in our Expedient Erection(!) in case of an Emergency Evacuation ..

I think my screws are definitely loose, RobinW!

Joe · 18/10/2001 17:42

Im going to take an excuse just in case one is needed. Fish tank, very relaxing to watch and in case i forget to grab my books. Dont forget Food.

Emmam · 19/10/2001 07:29

I'll take my husband too as I might as well not go in the shelter if he wasnt there (ds too of course). A hankey, as you should always carry one. Should or shouldnt we take a hoover?? Some honey as it will look nice on the shelf. Some glue might come in handy. Grapes. A heater, dont like being cold.

Jolly · 19/10/2001 13:12

i just have to say that when I first discovered this site I never dreamed I would one day read instructions on how to make a Geiger counter. I love mumsnet!!!

Tigermoth · 19/10/2001 13:19

Husband - decorative and useful.

H20 in case I forget water when we get to W.

Tons and tons of HOPE.

F could be for friends. It might be better to dig a larger shelter with friends and share it. Otherwise, being entombed for ages with only your family for company might end up like those gruesome Christmases, when everyone is desperate to get out of the house by Boxing Day! You should have a dry run first, just to rule out the possibility of said friends having anti-social habits, of course.

Joe · 20/10/2001 06:27

I think we were all too worried that we had enough food to even think about clothes.

Chairmum · 22/10/2001 09:50

If you have knives, better take a Knife sharpener. And if RobinW is taking a jigsaw for her dd I'll take Knex for my ds.

Ever the optimist, I'll take my Keys for house and car in case of a false alarm or they are still in one piece after the crisis.

Lots of big Knickers!! the possible end of the world is definitly a big Knicker occasion.

For L, I'll pack my borrowed Laptop in case the internet - and mumsnet - is still running. Bloss and Chell in sunny Australia, fancy putting up several thousands of your mumsnet frends???
Or I could email an SOS, or find out how to make that gieger counter that RobinW mentioned (Dh was very interested in that when I told him).

My Lenses are an absolute must, and lots of spare pairs, both contacts and glasses because I'm blind without them, vulnerable and useless.

A Lilo - easy to store and makes a good mattress.

Some general Lubrication, like WD40 to help make any emergency contraptions run smoothly.

Life jacket if near water.

And I'll slip in a Lipstick somewhere. Very good value considering how small it is versus how good it can make you feel.
