We moved ( back for me) to Australia - ahve such a good quality of life. One income family and still manage to have a house, holidays and quality of life. Great weather, house is fab.....

I could finish eidsvold's sentence for here with equal gush, but quite frankly I think it's cruel to rub it in.

we have looked at Northern Cyprus & Bulgaria so far (parents have land out there with planning) but to be honest at the moment we are not ruling anywhere out!! Lots and lots of research going on at the moment...

We moved to Switzerland as dh had the opprotuntiy tfor a transfer over there, and have now , 4 1/2 years later, returned to UK. I was 6 mnths pg and ds was 3 at the time.

It is very much a renting culture over there, as is much of Europe, and you would really need for either you or dh to have secured a job before you can go as it is hard to get a residence permit, rent a property, take out a loan for a car, without that, although EU citizens face fewer obstacles than those from Canada, US, Australia etc.

The pace of life is more relaxed, although working hours tend to be longer and start earlier. Commute times are generally shorter, traffic less and public transport efficient. There are so many other countries, mountains, lakes etc accessible within a relatively short distance. However it is very hard to integrate into local communities and the education system would take a lot of getting used to - not impossible but less room for individuality and you are expected to go along with the system and the autonomous teacher, not relaly question them or disagree with their approach or attitude - and private English speaking or bilingual schooling is very expensive.

In terms of quality of life and the amount of time we could spend together as a family it beats living here. However I always felt temporary and existing in parallel to the Swiss, and unfortunately it isn't all Heidi and picturesque snowy chalets!

What do you want to do?

I've lived abroad on/off most of my life with parents and now dh (in Turkey atm. Well in UK now but 50% of time in Turkey.)

If you're going to run a hotel/restaurant,I would seriously consider whether you would indeed have any more free time. Also think about language and family.....it is really really hard being somewhere where you can't communicate very well and are surrounded by people who frankly speaking, don't really care about you and possibly even resent you..

I know that sw and eidsvold have family in Oz so it's different.

Maybe not what you want to hear but you need to think long and hard...

I did move to the UK where I knew no one so can appreciate what that is like...

BUT yes - dh came here on a spousal visa and dd1 was an aussie citizen so we did not need to worry about getting her in .

thanks for that moondog/LIZS you have raised some very good point that hadnt crossed my mind, I guess we are being a bit naive & there is a lot more to consider than i had originally thought.....
