Well, this is a topic close to my heart and I have been getting steamed up about it for a long time, so I thought I would vent my spleen and see if other people agree or think I'm bonkers: I cannot bear football and footballers. I have nothing against the game itself, in fact I think it's a pretty good game. However I cannot stand the way footballers are the new heroes of the day. They rake in piles of cash for doing something not very important and it seems to me that these days they are all involved in drug scandals, rape and assault allegations, drunken binges and so on....and taking total advantage of everyone else in society. They are an abysmal example to young people in every way and let's face it they are not exactly blessed with brains unless I have missed something !Plus we have football clubs run as huge corporate businesses and fleecing the 'fans'( mugs, more like IMO) for every penny. And then there is the crowd hooliganism. I could go on for hours. Now the England team members are threatening to boycott this weekend's match against Turkey unless Rio Ferdinand is allowed to play despite the fact he blatantly flouted FA rules in failing to attend a drugs test. I say- boycott away! let Turkey win!! am I a total reactionary or do any of you agree with my sentiments ?

I think they are a pain in the neck as they cause a problem in the lane where I live. The hotel they stay at is 2 minutes from my house and all the camera crews and their lorries and cars make the lane very dangerous!

I threatened to run outside past the live broadcast last night in my nightie waving my arms, but DH said he would divorce me if I did!!

doormat · 09/10/2003 19:59

run around naked instead ailbubbles

alibubbles · 10/10/2003 09:23

I got a telephone call yesterday asking me to run a creche at this hotel, I asked if it was for the footballers!

Davros · 10/10/2003 10:01

Sopwell House by any chance ALibubbles? If so, I'm sure you are right that these particular footballers are a bunch of gits as its usually the Arsenal that go there....

singingmum · 10/10/2003 11:45

The problem with Rio F. taking the test 36hrs later CP is that by this time most drugs have left the system and it is suspicious that he had that time to allow this to happen. They should really start to random test as this would be much more accurate and then there could be no excuses.

alibubbles · 10/10/2003 13:04

Yes, Sopwell House or Slopwell as we call it as the food and service is c**p! But then if they cater for footballers what can you expect !

janh · 10/10/2003 14:09

The test he missed was random, singingmum. Well, ish. The testers turn up at a ground and say we'll do him, him, him and him, but have to wait until training is over I think, hence him forgetting - or "forgetting" - and when he remembered (or "remembered"!), they'd gone. Hence the 36 hour delay.

He's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, though, is he...

donnie · 10/10/2003 14:16

but he was filmed on CCTV doing some shopping when he was meant to be drugs testing! it just proves he has no brains and too big an ego.Rock on eidsvold for your earlier comments !if you do the crime, you pay your time and that's it. I can just hear him now, "I'm sorry m'lud but I had some urgent shopping to do...."!

I also heard an unsubstantiated rumour that the reason one 'forgot' the test was that one had a little 'disease' that would have also shown up and was wary of that occurring. Probably totally false but sounded good to me

I remember why I married dh now, cos he isn't into football.
I hate it, hate it hate it.
Cannot understand why kicking a ball is such a great talent that it had be rewarded with more than I will earn in a thousand lifetimes (maths not strong point but i may be rightish)...

alibubbles · 10/10/2003 22:19

Eowyn, join the club! DH and I hate football too, so does DS (16). We will however be watching the Rugby this weekend!
