Nativity Play: What is a "Shepherd" costume?

NotQuiteCockney · 15/11/2005 13:57

Seriously, I'm not from here. DS1 is 4. He is a shepherd in the nativity play. What will he wear?

(Hmm, I could probably dig out the DVD from last year's production, but I don't think you could see costumes very well ...)

It is a tea towel worn on the head with a headband round it to hold it on. Plus a sort of poncho arrangement over trousers.

WigWamBam · 15/11/2005 13:58

Tabardy type thing made from a cut-down sheet with a hole for the head, tea-towel fixed around the head with a pyjama cord.

gigglinggoblin · 15/11/2005 14:00

a sheet with a hole in the middle for the head, goes down to the feet (ish) then tied round the waist with a cord of some sort. tea towel on head, again tied round with a bit of cord. and a stuffed sheep and a long walking stick (shepherds crook?) if you can find them

Blu · 15/11/2005 14:00

Bare legs and sandals - or possibly wellies, with baggy rousers tucked in.

Bozza · 15/11/2005 14:01

This will not be much help to you but my 9mo nephew is set to make his acting debut as a shepherd. He is wearing a tea towel on his head (probably for about 10 seconds) and a short sleeved checked shirt of DS's (he's 4) tied around the middle.

The usual is a tea towel on the head and a sort of tunic tied around the waist I think. So get length of cloth (maybe stripy), fold in two, cut semi-circle out of folded edge and hem if you fancy it. Then tie round waist with belt, dressing gown cord or whatever. Sandals on feet if he has any that fit. Or bare feet.

CarolinaMoon · 15/11/2005 14:01

like this

tarantula · 15/11/2005 14:02

Tea towel on the head held on by cord is obligatory

LIZS · 15/11/2005 14:04

dd, much to her disgust, has been cast as a sheep - she so wants to be an angel !! Apparently she'll need a woolly jumper which of course we don't have - aargh.

NotQuiteCockney · 15/11/2005 14:04

Ok. So I have to buy fabric? Ugh.

I guess I can't really knit the poncho, can I?

Last year, DS1 was a cow. I gave up, started looking for costumes online. I recognised one of them as being one a friend had, so borrowed that, instead. Much easier.

Nope you cant KNIT the poncho NQC as they didnt have knitting back then. you could try to naalbind one tho Now that would be very authentic.

Have you thougth of raiding dps wardrobe for a collarless shirt or even a large plain t-shirt might do.

Passionflowerinapeartree · 15/11/2005 14:21

Brown tunic, tea towel on head shepherds crook

binkie · 15/11/2005 14:35

RE: walking stick, very desirable prop for small boys. What sort is yours? (Small boy, I mean.) I proudly furnished mine with a crook and then cringed in breathheld horror 15 pews back as I saw it rise ... and swing ... and not quite hit the crib ... and rise again, all with chorus of parrot-like exulting noises. Be warned.

tortoiseshell · 15/11/2005 14:43

Ds was shepherd last year - we did t-shirt of dh's, tied round middle with string, over plain trousers, teatowel on head, tied with more string. Looked very sweet!

NotQuiteCockney · 15/11/2005 14:43

Oooh, good point about the walking stick.

DS1 would probably use it as a light saber. They will have at least one rehearsal in costume, though, so the teachers can nix the walking stick if needed ... probably he won't get one at all.

I hope my dd is a shepherd this year, last year she was a robin!

SPARKLER1 · 15/11/2005 14:49

DD was a shepherd last year. She wore a tea towel tied with string around her head and her PINK dressing gown . Well she was a female shepherd after all!!

SoupDragon · 15/11/2005 17:21

DS2 was lead shepherd last year. Wore a hand made saffron tunic over beigh trousers and long sleeved top with a saffron and white checked T towel safety pinned to shape and held on by cord. No crook for weapons reasons.

He looked divine!

SoupDragon · 15/11/2005 17:22

I could probably post you the tunic and T towel if you like!! They're around here somewhere...

Bagpuss30 · 15/11/2005 17:36

Asda are doing Nativity costumes (for those of us who can't quite manage sewing ).

here

ds1 is being a sheep this year - as are his whole class so you can bet that asda will have sold out of costumes by the weekend .

binkie · 15/11/2005 17:38

I want a robin - I was misled (by dd) into thinking she was going to be a robin at nursery, when in the end they weren't dressed up at all. And she would have been such a gorgeous robin, all hecticly pink cheeks and bounce.

LIZS · 15/11/2005 17:46

hmmm, should I get one "just in case" ?

SD, I am catting you, would love to borrow the tunic and tea towel. But I will only accept them if I can also have a head circumference + colour preference for a hat for one of your kids.
