I can't understand it!
I have one of those glass round bowls, quite big.
a couple of friend have theirs in those round plastic bowls, no filters or anything an dthey have had them ages.
ds1 and ds2 are not impressed
Help please!

Did you get them all from the same shop?

Kelly1978 · 15/11/2005 11:52

Is it something in your tap water? get some aquasafe nd treat your water before addding it to the bowl. I assume you didn't put all five in at once? Let the bowl sit for a few days before adding fish too. Make sure you aren't overfeeding them neither, as it raises the nitrate levels. Goldfish produce a lot of waste.

zippitippitoes · 15/11/2005 11:52

I thought the round bowels didn't provide enough surface area or something so there wasn't enough oxygen

water too hard or too soft

poor goldfish stock are you getting them from the same place

NomDePlume · 15/11/2005 11:54

ewwww, 'round bowels' !!!!

Kelly1978 · 15/11/2005 11:54

zippitippitoes is right about the oxygen levels. That is why you should only keep 1-2 fish in a bowl. Bowls aren't a great idea in any case.

zippitippitoes · 15/11/2005 11:54

that'll be bowls not bowels lol

NomDePlume · 15/11/2005 11:54

lol

Rhubarb · 15/11/2005 11:54

LOL!

LilacBump · 15/11/2005 11:55

do plenty of water changes
use safewater or a similar products to make tapwater safe
are you getting air into the tank?
not overfeeding (they eat whatever you give them, even if not hungry, apparently)

mugface · 15/11/2005 11:57

I have only kept one at a time, each time it's died i have got another one. I have even put that tapsafe stuff in...

perhaps even fish can't handle living in my madhouse!

whats wrong with round bowls nomedeplume?

is the water different where you buy them?
you could take some of the water in to the shop to be tested they'll tell you what's wrong if anything, and lock up the food so the sprogs dont overfeed.

NomDePlume · 15/11/2005 12:00

nothing, I was at the typo of 'round bowels

NomDePlume · 15/11/2005 12:00

when you buy the fish, do you add the water from the bag into your tank?
have you tested the ph etc from your tank?

Rhubarb · 15/11/2005 12:04

My dh used to add the water from the bag, into the tank. But the water in the tank ideally needs to be treated and should be lukewarmish and left standing for a while.

Kelly1978 · 15/11/2005 12:07

you should add the water from the bag. You should get them home, stand the bag in the tank for half hour then release it. And add some stresszyme too. My parrot goes pink when she is stressed, but stresszyme is really good at getting them back to normal.

mugface · 15/11/2005 12:09

i think i'll take the stresszyme!

keep jumping everytime the phone rings thinking it's the school

LilacBump · 15/11/2005 12:09

actually, you shouldn't add the water, that way you contaminate your tank. you should let the bag sit at the top for 15 minutes, add bits of water from your tank and then take your fish out and put them in your tank and pour the water down the sink!

Rhubarb · 15/11/2005 12:14

Your parrot goes pink when stressed? Are you sure it's not just pink anyway??? I can never remember my parrot being any other colour than green!

Kelly1978 · 15/11/2005 12:15

nope, she is def orange usually, goes a lovely pink colour when stressed tho!

handlemecarefully · 15/11/2005 12:16

You should routinely add a water conditioner to the water such as aquasafe to stop excessive nitrates, nitrites etc...

Get a gerbil - much better!

Kelly1978 · 15/11/2005 12:19

nooo gerbils bite. Get a rat.

handlemecarefully · 15/11/2005 12:22

We've got those in the rafters Kelly! - you tend to find them a bit less endearing when they have infested your roof space

Kelly1978 · 15/11/2005 12:28

you're supposed to keep them in a cage!
