Fallen in love with a floor... should I or shouldn't I???

Have been looking for a new floor for my living room and have finally found one I love but it's just over £90 a square metre (plus cost of laying/screeding etc). It's more than I wanted to spend and I'm not sure I can really stretch that far for a floor but it's sooo perfect and I've got my heart set on it.

I fell in love with a slate floor for my kitchen.
I now hate it with a passion.

CountessDracula · 14/11/2005 15:42

Will it add that value to the house?

CountessDracula · 14/11/2005 15:42

I mean over and above getting something serviceable and nice. is it wood?

starlover · 14/11/2005 15:43

have you shopped around? scour the internet to see if you can get it any cheaper... or if you can buy straight from manufacturer?

can you find a cheaper one that looks the same iyswim?

if you've got your heart set on it then i say go for it!

MascaraOHara · 14/11/2005 15:53

It won't add value to the house and yes it's hardwood.

I'm currently searching the internet and looking round for an alternative. Would prefer not real wood as you have to wax (or something) real wood every 6months (apparently).

I'm not sure that I will be able to get the look I want with an artifical wood as it needs to look rustic and warm yet not too dark. but I don't want pale wood.

This one is a gorgeous rich wood and all the knots are darker - it's gorgeous, really warm and inviting

wow £90 is a bit steep though isn't it even for hardwood. Must be cheaper somewhere?

CountessDracula · 14/11/2005 16:30

You can get dark oak for £30 - £40 a sq m which looks fine. I know what you mean though, I fell in love with the 200 yo french oak floor that we have now but luckily the supplier was a mate so we got for a song. Are you after a rustic look or a smart one?

gingerbear · 14/11/2005 16:33

We have Quick Step 950 (Bevelled Edges)in antique oak.
£25 per sq metre from Floors2go
It is laminate, has scuffs and knots etc too.

gingerbear · 14/11/2005 16:34

It is rustic, warm, and not too dark.

skinnycow · 14/11/2005 16:45

yes get it!

CountessDracula · 14/11/2005 16:53

MascaraOHara · 15/11/2005 17:06

Hi, only just come back on.. can't frequent as much as I used to these days. Thanks for the offer CD but I'm not in London.

Have to take the samples back tomorrow really and still can't decide what to do. I can't find it online. A guy I work with thinks its so expensive because the planks are really long and wide.

gingerbear what is wrong with your slate floor, was thinking about it for my new kitchen/family room? pros and cons please!

CountessDracula · 15/11/2005 19:44

ks ask for Alex

gingerbear · 15/11/2005 22:36

Slate floor - ours was 'natural slate' - uneven thicknesses of tiles, and lots of ridges and bumps. Looked beauiful when first laid and sealed, but the sealant has worn, now it is stained, oil soaked and grimy. It needs stripping with concentrated caustic soda and re-sealing, but I am loathed to do such a horrible job with DD and dog around.

Miaou · 15/11/2005 22:44

Sorry I have nothing of value to say on this thread but keep misreading it as "Fallen on the floor - should I have or shouldn't I?" - hehehe

pashmina · 16/11/2005 08:36

Thanks gingerbear - have knocked it off my wish list!

MascaraOHara · 16/11/2005 08:56

Pashmina, I wanted real slate for my kitchen and the guy in the shop told me no-way with kids around.. I got a very good quality artificial slate (twice the price) but is wonderful and I love it!!! You could have a look at that!

gingerbear · 16/11/2005 09:02
