What are you doing on New Year's Eve?

For the first time in many years dh and I have no children on New Year's Eve. In the past we have had his parents round for a meal, which has been nice but this year as we are not tied to staying in I fancy doing something different.
Problem is that our friends all have long standing arrangements which we aren't included in as we have never been availabe.

I feel that if we go out just the two of us we will be a bit swamped by New Years Eve Parties and large groups of people. We had thought of going away and ataking advantage fo teh Travelodge £10 offer but once again I picture us somewhere on our own when everyone else is in a large group.

Suggestions? What do you do?

Well we stay in but that's cos we've got small children!

Last year we got duvets down on the floor, put a film on and supped champagne and had some posh chocs! You could try that - y'never know, maybe you could be really 'productive'

zippitippitoes · 14/11/2005 12:36

I imagine that children being old enough to occupy themselves has segged back into babysitting

HRHQoQ · 14/11/2005 12:39

possibly working??

otherwise I'll be at home with DH, the boys will be in bed and we'll have a bottle of wine together.

mememum · 14/11/2005 12:41

We're going to a restaurant where its champagne and set menu but its parties of four and under. Friends went last year and said the atmosphere was really good and no rowdy big parties. Usually stay at home with champagne and buffet type meal.

In with lovely special nosh and champagne. Don't do Out on NYE any more unless a party - too many amateurs. Plus, minor problem of a breastfeeding baby.

Tickle · 14/11/2005 12:45

I shall hopefully be anticipating a nice short labour starting very soon (edd Jan 2!) - or even better cuddling a scrummy new born, with all associated posh nosh, champagne etc

Nemo1977 · 14/11/2005 12:45

we will be staying home as have a 2 yr old and will have a 2 wk old baby too. However I like the idea of a bit of champers and posh choccies.

bubblerock · 14/11/2005 12:46

We might go to a family ball I think they hold one at the Winter Gardens and I fancy going out this year, we usually go to family but too far away this year.

Bomper · 14/11/2005 13:00

Feck all as usual!!! TBH I think NYE is a bit over-rated. So much pressure to be 'out enjoying yourself', over-priced, over-stuffed restaurants, or heaving pubs. Yuck! I'll probably be snuggled up with dh, a DVD, a bottle of wine and lots of nibbles.

Decided on a trip to Edinburgh - I've never been to Scotland so Hogmany seems a good time to start.

We can get the hotel for free with our Tesco vouchers and train fare is £46, so it's not going to break the bank.

Woo hoo!!

Sounds good lilibet. We have 4 and 1 yos and no babysitter. Last year we took them out to the local Italian restaurant for a 6.30 pm booking. They were both angels and loved the crackers/party poppers and the staff made a great fuss of them. So we will probably do something like that again and then home and put them to bed. Then DH and I will sit around with full bellies.

Skribble · 15/11/2005 22:23

I will be out working in the peeing rain or ice and snow as usual. Normally bring the bells in trying to prise 16yr old drunk females out of portaloos or doorways, or trying to clear evaquation routes, oh joy. Means I get to kiss lots of coppers after the bells though, (sorry thats a personal fetish).

Skribble · 15/11/2005 22:26

lilibet are you prepared for Hogmany in Edinburgh .

tabitha · 15/11/2005 22:32

Hope you have a lovely time in Edinburgh lilibet Are you planning to go to any of the events when you'fe there?
As for me, I expect we'll be staying in on Hogmanay - lack of babysitters Have had a crazy notion to do the Loony Dook at South Queensferry (not far from Edinburgh) on New Years Day - you could come along to watch and laugh if you fancy it.

Skribble · 15/11/2005 22:35

tabitha are you mad, I always thought it was a major expedition going up Arthur's seat on new years day never mind going for a dook.

tabitha · 15/11/2005 22:43

Very probably

lilibet · 16/11/2005 09:22

Ok, what's loony dook?

I am turning 41 on NYE and will likely do nothing whatsoever as is usual on my birthday. Last year, being the big four oh, we went to Pairs which was fantastic, but we have no money for such fripperies this year. I can heartily recommend doing something special like that though if NYE or birthdays normally depress you.

tabitha · 16/11/2005 11:44

loony dook

This , this , this or perhaps not this .
