Just wonderered what how old the child must be before they can do this.

Also can anyone recommend an all inclusive 2 day break (or similar)

Thanks

I've been with dd1 (10) a few times, but only for 2 hours at a time, we both ride, she had been riding since she was 6. 2 day breaks are normally aimed at competent riders, and if the children are about 12ish they tend to quiz you a lot about their capabilities before they are allowed to go. 1 or 2 hours treks are much more suitable for non-riders/young children. I think about 6 is probably a good age to start, but I do know a lot of places will take younger kids for short treks. How old are your kids & have they done any riding?
Also, a lot of the trekking places round here stop during the winter. I took dd1 & some of her friends on her birthday in October & it threw it down for 2 hours. Luckily, they all love riding & had a good time but if it was your first go I think it may have put you off for life! I had to sit in the car for 10 mins to thaw out enough to drive home.

berries where are you?

dd is 6,and never really done any riding before (city girl!) -she went to a country park place once and had a guided pony ride - which she loved.

Neither me nor dh ride, but just thought it'd be a nice activity for us all to try.

dh was thinking of taking her away for a weekend somewhere, maybe in the Feb holidays, but not sure where.

I think at this age you are still looking at guided (led rides). I remember helping out at a local school with the younger ones ( I was 11) and we had to hold their leg when they trotted.

If out on a trek its hard to make sure they are ok and enjoying it as you normally ride in a line. If neither of youy are riders I would recomend a holiday where you can get a couple of lessons in the field/ school first. any longer and the muscles hurt too much for them to enjoy it.

The only place I can recomend is in Ireland.

I worked with older kids too 11+ and they would get 1hr in the field first then out for 40 min treks.

I took dd1 and her friend when she was just turned 8, which was the youngest they would take kids. We went in summer on a lovely day and both girls really enjoyed it, however I have gone myself in winter and I think it would be much less enjoyable for kids then.
For a cheapish pony trekking break what about the Youth Hostel Association (or Scottish equivalent). Can't reommend it personally but my friend went on one of these breaks a few years ago and had a great time.
