I'm sorry but I JUST HAD TO SAY.....I've been watching it this week and thought it was really brilliant! A few bits were a bit of a let down but all still very gripping stuff. Anyone want to join in......I'm a bit of a soap fanatic and like to chin wag about it.

I didn't bother watching it because the story came out so long ago!

Actually as a small aside, did Natalie have an abortion or not? It has been that long since I sat and watched it.

I wonder how Mel will be written out as well.

I thought it was very well done Dixie. One question though, do you think a real victim of child sex abuse would turn out like Kat?

I have tried, God knows I've tried, to get into Eastenders but the most 'into it' I am is Steve McFadden's voice. Not been the same since the days of Angie and Den.

A friend of mine and I spent a thoroughly enjoying evening (although it says very little about my life) trying to recall every character from the show. We did very well actually I think.
I DON'T KNOW WHY, DON'T ASK, NOT MUCH HAPPENS AROUND THESE PARTS, YOU GET YOUR THRILLS WHERE YOU CAN.

Lizzer · 05/10/2001 16:51

Croppy, I think it's highly likely that Kat would turn out like that. I'm no child psychologist but I'm sure that if a child has been abused in an emotional (and physical) way then it can make the child have real problems when faced with making 'normal' adult relationships in the future as their experiences have shaped them to take a different viewpoint. It can make the child aware of the power of sex and they in turn can use this to their own ends as an adult without really considering the consequences of their actions just as they weren't thought about by their abuser. It's similar to the patterns of violence throughout families that keep repeating generation after generation.... I know this is just one reaction to the abuse and I'm sure lots of other people act in different ways, i.e. sex seems disgusting and frightening to them, but I reckon there is a usually an extreme reaction either way in some cases so she is quite believable as a character.

Loola, I'm with you on the 'entertaining evening' front! Me and my friend had the greatest fun one night when someone sent us an email of 200 song lyrics from the 80's to print out, and we had to name each title and artist! We didn't do too well, especially after 2 bottles of wine but much fun was had by singing loudly and very out-of-tune! We're just simple souls with simple pleasures I guess (actually I've still got the word document, do you think Mumsnet would hate me for cutting and pasting all 200 on the message board)!!

Ems · 05/10/2001 17:59

Ooh, I dont know Lizzer, a few would be fun to pass the time of day ....

Debster · 05/10/2001 19:51

I would absolutely love to play the song lyrics game. My partner reckons he knows everything about 80s music so this would be fab. Please Mumsnet can Lizzer post them?!

Jbr · 05/10/2001 20:01

Kidscape say a lot of abusers have been abused but don't get much help or sympathy. It's difficult, because you don't want to excuse or condone but criticism feels inappropriate as well.

Going back to EE I haven't seen it in ages either as I said nor Corrie.

Rhiannon · 05/10/2001 21:46

If I watched soaps, there'd be no time for this!

Dixie · 06/10/2001 13:04

Ok, ok so I'm a sad fanatic and in the minority, but I can't help it, I like soaps!!

....JBR yes I agree the story was released in the papers ages ago but it was nothing like how i imagined it would be done. I think they've handled it quite well in most parts and Jessie Wallace is superb as Kat. Finally, NO Natalie didn't go through with the abortion.

Oh, I really thought she would for some reason. I didn't like what she said about not wanting the baby because she wanted a career - not sure if the script writers meant we shouldn't have both or if it was an indication into Natalie's character.

Jodee · 06/10/2001 14:22

I'm a take it or leave it kinda girl when it comes to Eastenders, but this week I've been rivetted, and nearly in tears. But yet again, why do all the best storylines have to be SO DEPRESSING???

Pie · 07/10/2001 10:11

I'm also a take it or leave it person when it comes to EE, but I heard about this weeks story and some friends went on about how well done it was so I watched the repeats on BBC Choice....I was in tears!

Jessie Wallace was amazing...and I felt that it was really sensitively done...

Don't know if this means that I will become a regular watcher again though.

Candy · 07/10/2001 14:52

I just caught today's Eastenders as a complete non-fan and not having heard anything at all about the storyline, and I have to say that i thought it was excellent. Far more powerful than the dire Act Two of Jubilee which I saw at the Swan last night! If Shakespeare was alive today he'd be writing soap operas! I agree entirely that Cat's reaction could be an entirely natural one. Having taught pupils who have been sexually abused I wd say that about 50% of them were like this whilst the others were very "closed". Please don't think I have a lot of evidence to back this instinctive impression on _it's only based on about 6 kids.

Wornout · 08/10/2001 10:43

I am a take it or leave it, that is until there is a good story line. I think Kat's personality has developed not only from the fact that she was abused but also because her Mother did not believe her! By the way did her Mum have an affair with Uncle 'Arry?
Lizzer I still love 80's music so would love to plat the game too.
