where do you reckon would be a good place to live?

not in the middle of nowhere, but fairly rural. or maybe a small town. oh i don't know! so far we're considering norfolk (possibly not enough hills), devon, errr, that's it.

my family are in yorkshire so i'm trying to persuade dp that north is a good idea. ds is almost 4, dd 4 months, so need decent schools. help!

i love brighton, but it's no cheaper than here. and dp would probably end up commuting to london - stressy & he would spend less time wtih the kids.

thought I might have spelt it wrong . its very pretty isn't it? All wuthering heights and stone walls. exactly how what I think of when I picture Yorkshire.

Medea · 12/11/2005 19:39

Just saw this, HC.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!!

What is this crazy talk? You are NOT moving out of London, you are staying put! I'm afraid I am not going to be an enabler by joining in with the practical suggestion-giving. (And I have none, anyway.)

Just wanted to show my support!

hoxtonchick · 12/11/2005 19:56

you can come & visit medea - experience deepest rural england!

hc, very interesting to see this. We're thinking of P'boro for very similar reasons. Dp also fed up with job, I could earn enough for us all so that he could set up own company. I'm fed up with the amount of time it takes to get anywhere in London. Even a nearby place you have to allow half an hour.

hoxtonchick · 12/11/2005 20:03

hooray for escaping fisil . how far have you got with your plans?

Smurfgirl · 12/11/2005 20:04

350K is still quite a lot up north

hoxtonchick · 12/11/2005 20:05

do you think so smurfgirl? prices in york have distracted me i guess.

OP posts:
Smurfgirl · 12/11/2005 20:11

Yes definately. I am Hull which is foul, but massive 4 bed Victorian houses on my quite nice street are still under 250K! My mam and dad live in a lovely town near N.Yorks with fantastic schools, good local amentities etc and again under 250K for a decent 4 bed

Beverley is near me, an hour from Leeds, York, Sheffield (Meadowhall . Fab schools, nice town.
Found this this

Smurfgirl · 12/11/2005 20:11

Sorry I think Edinburgh and Glasgow are out. You would be struggling to get a 4 bedroom detached house in a good area for schools for £350K. Scotland is not as cheap as people think. Also the commuting is bad in both these cities.

piffle · 12/11/2005 20:26

We got 4 bed detached on edge of village for £223k last yr, there are beautiful houses here like victorian manor houses and all sorts in rural areas, but still within stones throw of civilisation
We are thinking of abandoning the burbs and moving to a more rural village still in Lincs/Sleaford in 2-3 yrs...

tamum · 12/11/2005 20:27

Sadly I would have to give in and agree with Kristina. Edinburgh is pretty expensive

Flossam · 12/11/2005 20:39

Peterborough is nice. Used to have family there. How about somewhere near Cambridge? Nice city there from what I remember but also lots of lovely villages on the outskirts so you wouldn't be too 'out of it'.

Umm, oxfordshire? That way not too far from London still, Oxford nearby...

Or my personal favourite, Bristol, we are hoping to escape the city (well Essex) there next year. Although don't even ask about that at the moment, bigggg stresses I don't want to think about! I used to live there and I think it is wonderful (although I am sure it is alot of fond drunken memories which are influencing it!!). Bath could be good too, again lots of lovely rural villages close to a big centre, sounds ideal for you. How exciting having such a decision to make!

Oh yes it is Cod!

Flossam · 12/11/2005 21:00

Sorry in panto mode!

piffle · 12/11/2005 21:30

Agree Peterborough cultural desert, great for under 30's with no kids, good jobs and decent wages, decent price housing but dull dull dull place to live, a bit of racial frisson in recent yrs too.
Train trip to London on best rail service in country 45 mins not bad....
But that's the only thing to recommend it

acnebride · 12/11/2005 21:37

Beverley beverley beverley beverley. Sorry never lived there but i know a couple of v nice people who used to live there, and dh had an interview in hull a year ago and we got v excited and printed out loads of house details going look how many bedrooms here! Schools great (by the looks of them), countryside fab etc.

Flossam · 12/11/2005 21:56

My friend lives in Beverely actually. Will ask her too if you like. Haven't ever made it to visit though.

hoxtonchick · 12/11/2005 22:03
