Did you know if you don't go within a FIFTEEN month period they take you off the NHS list

They do not have to pre-warn you of this according

Only found out today, and by the skin of our teeth the whole Twiglett clan luckily retain NHS status

I wish I was in that situation........no dentists around of NHS-ilk and either our teeth will fall out or it will cost a bomb!! Grrrrrrrrr

Merlin · 10/11/2005 16:56

Had that happen to me just recently too - I pleaded ignorance and luckily they kept us on!

LadyTophamHatt · 10/11/2005 16:56

My ba$stard dentist went private regardless of wheter we went very 6 months or not.

popsycal · 10/11/2005 16:57

eeeek
this might apply to me

flamesparrow · 10/11/2005 16:57

Happened to us. I was stroppy because they didn't send me my 12 month reminder for my check up, so I didn't realise it had even been 12 motnhs, let alone 15

Bozza · 10/11/2005 16:58

Yes mine without informing me has just stopped sending out reminders for appts as used to be his system. I have checked on the calendar and our last appt was April (was sure it was before DD's 1st birthday in May because I didn't pay) so need to ring and see if I can get an appt after school on a Monday or Friday - so will probably take us up to the 15 month limit to get fitted in.

collision · 10/11/2005 16:58

What are the prices for a private dentist? do you have to register and does it cost to register?

Racers · 10/11/2005 16:59

I heard less time than this is a possibility but it was just coffee room chat and might be specific to one practice?!

Glad you kept on the books, it's awful the way things are with so many going private.

WigWamBam · 10/11/2005 17:05

It's 14 months with our dentist, but we get a letter from them after 12 months reminding us that we're getting close to the 14 months. Our old dentist was the same.

There's a form that you can fill in letting them know that you still want to be on their books and receive NHS treatment (our old dentist used to send it out with the letter).

iota · 10/11/2005 17:05

mine too LadyTophamHatt

WigWamBam · 11/11/2005 10:59

Had a thought about this this morning ...

The 15 months starts from the beginning of your last course of treatment, not from the end, so you may well think you've got plenty of time left but haven't.

I had six months of treatment last year, had a letter asking me to go for a 6 month checkup while I was still having the treatment, and then at about the time my next checkup was due I had a letter saying that my NHS registration was about to run out. As far as I was concerned I had only seen them six months before, but as far as their records were concerned it had been 12 months.

zippitippitoes · 11/11/2005 11:22

my dentist of 21 years has stopped taking nhs patients so it was go private or go elsewhere which is annoying as I'm exempt from chjarges

NomDePlume · 11/11/2005 11:24

We go 6 monthly religiously [smug emoticon]

alicemama · 11/11/2005 11:33

even if you haven't got the time to book an appointment, you can just sign a form every 15 months to keep your registration up to date.

Gobbledigook · 11/11/2005 11:35

My dentist went private too - he's so utterly fantastic though, I don't mind paying. I certainly wouldn't change dentist to get an NHS one (not that I'd be likely to find one mind you!)

nutcracker · 11/11/2005 11:36

Oh crap

Gobbledigook · 11/11/2005 11:37

Collision - we are with Denplan so pay so much a month. I think we only pay £10.50 each (not the kids - they are free) so you probably have to pay for some treatments on top but I never have anything done so it doesn't matter. Standard check ups and some cleaning etc is included in that.

GeorginaA · 11/11/2005 11:37

and this is why we always book up our next appointment before we leave the building for the last one...

nutcracker · 11/11/2005 11:39

Think i'll definatly be out then. Just fetched the reminder letter from off the pinboard and that was sent November 26th LAST YEAR

Didn't realise it had been THAT long since we went.

nutcracker · 11/11/2005 11:40

Can you take kids out of school for dentist appointments ??

this happened to us, luckily we got back via a waiting list but was a nasty moment
I have since had FOUR fillings

diva4mgl · 11/11/2005 11:58

i paid 75pounds to register and 1st check-up private dentist.

Anteater · 11/11/2005 12:06

Queues 100 yds long in Carlisle this week as yet another Dentist turns private.. not really the Dentists fault but guess its the way all health issues will be dealt with (£££) in the future..

throckenholt · 11/11/2005 12:27

I was talking to my dentist the other day and he was explaining that as an NHS dentist he is allocated 10 minutes per patient appointment - which is really not enough time to do anything much. That is something near 50 people per day - he said it makes his head spin seeing that many people and really doesn't like it.

It seems to me our NHS dentistry is way underfunded.
