How do i put my own hair up for a party?

Have finally decided on my coomplete outfit for my Xmas do but have now realised my hair looks much better up with the outfit on rather than down. Now i am completely useless at putting hair up, can just about manage a pony tail but that takes me about 10 minutes making sure there are no bumps.

So I need to know 1) what up style to have and 2) how the hell do I do it?

TIA x

Right IMO the easiest way to put it up is with one of those clips that look really spiky and have a pointed end (DYKWIM?). You could buy a sparkly one/one to match your outfit. Then brush your hair, hold it with one hand like you were putting a low down pony tail in and twist it up. Then hold the hair with one hand and use the other hand to secure with the big clip. You might need small grips at the side also to catch the wispy bits. Then you should have sticky out ends which I would get the straighteners on to make them look a bit spiky. Will see if I can find a link to the kind of clip I mean.

Like this one from Accessorize.

could you not go to a hairdressers and get it done? much easier and a bit of pampering is good for the soul

Bozza · 10/11/2005 09:36

Good idea nailpolish. I used to do that when I was young and went out on dos.

nailpolish · 10/11/2005 09:51

i do it all the time for posh dos

its not usually that pricey, depends on salon i suppose

Springchicken · 10/11/2005 10:19

Thanks guys - I would do this but my problem is that the do is 100's of miles away and we are leaving at 11am to get there and have a stroll around in the afternoon etc. So can't got to hairdressers here otherwise it'll all fall out and cant really go up there or DP will be stuck like a bit of a plank, wandering around in a lonely old city.

If the do is at a posh hotel, they sometimes have hairdressers on site - I used to phone well in advance to book (and dh could sit and chill in the hotel room for an hour)

There is nothing specific on your link Bozza - think i know what you mean though, Am off to accessorize this afternoon so will grab one whilst im there.

Oh sorry. It calls it a banana clip on the site but I think of that as something else they had in the 80s. Another way is to use loads of little grips and twist small bits of hair and pin, and repeat until you've got it all up. My friend does this and it looks quite funky (IMO) and I keep meaning to have a go but never get round to it.

crunchie · 10/11/2005 10:39

Don't do it too neat, that is the key. Get loads of hairspray, hair that was washed the day before if poss, and nice clips, bulldog clip thing or something. I usually find my hair looks better when I chuck it up, than if I spend hours.

Springchicken · 10/11/2005 10:42

Thanks again. Bozza love the twisting lotsof little bits idea. Will get some kirby grips today too and try all these out tonight. I do want something a bit funky and retro.
Am off to the hairdressers tomorrow for a trima nd colour so will ask their opinion too.

if you went to the hairdressers at 9am it still wouldnt have fallen out by nightime, ive done it myself!

but you might feel a bit of a prat wandering around town with a really posh do..

mogwai · 10/11/2005 12:27

another vote for the hairdressers

And get someone to pick you up outside

My "wedding hair" lasted all the way to Bangkok

Springchicken · 11/11/2005 08:58

Yeah i would feel like a bit of a twit NP but maybe a very good idea. And like the picking up outside Mogwai.

I sat and twisted and pinned all of my hair back last night and it looked really good from the front and sides but DP said the back look ed a bit dodgy (I don;t know what he expects with me doing it myself). The middle bit didn't really sit right. Will keep trying though and ask the hairdresser today.
