Someone suggested I become a Mystery Shopper, but I don't know anyone who does it and what it really involves. Any info./advice?

Ahhhh. My idea of heaven - and being paid for it!

But sorry, looloo - no advice...

I don't know any agencies in the UK, but I have employed mystery shoppers in NZ and have to say that its not as great as it sounds. A good memory is essential as you have to fill in a report afterwards with things like "did they clearly state the price?". Obviously having a notepad would take some of the mystery out of it. You could also spend a lot of time "shopping" for something you don't want or aren't interested in -my mystery shoppers were looking at insurance companies.

I did find one website for you mystery shopping

looloo, I thought about doing this too. I started the registration process with NOP and got as far as printing off their instructions for a practise run (it's not on the website, came in an email later) but it seemed so complicated and to require such precise recollection of facts that I didn't think I had the brain power! (You're not allowed to carry bits of paper and make notes during your visit.) (Oh, sorry, bobthebaby, you just said that!)

a boyfriend's mum used to do this and we used to help. It's very tedious. You are told to go to X shop (address and town given) and buy/ask them about something. We were asking for test drives for some car or other. You then have to fill in a report afterwards. As I remember it wasn't even very well paid.

We used to have them where I worked and they had to check the state of the toilets. Lovely!

There is also mystery-shoppers.co

and the-mystery-shopper but they use secret video cameras - not sure I'd like doing that either! (And no recruitment details on the website).

Hi, yes I do it and get payed £10 per 'shop'. It can be a pain as said before, as you have to buy something check out the changing rooms/shop/assistants etc then go back 1/2 hour later and return it. But it's easy money if you are shopping already. I've also done some bank vists. I'm with a company called Grassroots. I was hoping to get some reataurant vsits but I think that may be another agency, any suggestions welcome.

Redwood, do they tell you which town/store you have to go to (that sounds like a silly question now I've asked it!) and do you get a good mileage allowance?

Notlob · 30/09/2003 20:42

i do it ...The Service Practice
For a meal out ..we get between £30-£40
You get used to watching EVERYTHING & it becomes less of a chore.
We've been bowling, meals out, "drinks only" visits. Claire's Accessories is a regular - only a fiver but it keeps us in clips & bobbles ( we don't have to return our purchases, they in leiu
of payment. But you don't have to spend all they give you

janh · 30/09/2003 21:42

Notlob - can I guess where you live???

looloo · 01/10/2003 19:54

Thanks all for your advice and comments. Still not sure what I think really. More trouble than it's worth?

Oh, I'm very inspired by this thread. Have had to do loads and loads of test purchases for work and make notes about them afterwards. At least these won't end up in court

Redwood · 02/10/2003 20:52

janh, yes they tell you all the store details and when to go, but no travel costs, so it's only worth it if you were going shopping anyway - which I do a lot!

Notlob · 02/10/2003 21:06

janh
yes you can probably guess where i live!
I've just changed my name as DH was on a mission to find out who I was & I didn't want him to know...but who was I?

sunchowder · 03/10/2003 20:37

Oh My GOD, another name change--I can't take it anymore....
