how horrible! hope his dad gets it sorted out for him.

kid · 08/11/2005 21:19

He has to get the bus home, he can get a choiceof 2 buses so maybe he should use the other one. His dad works just down the road from him but he got a bit lost when running away from the boys tonight so didn't know the way there. He was really upset by the time he eventually got home. He said he thinks the boy is going to kill him The gang members are the same age, the so called leader is not in his class but is in some of his lessons.

When you are decomposing fractions you are supposed to look for the highest common multiple of the numerator and the denominator and work down both the top line and the bottom.

So when Philipat came out with 70/21 then you should spot that 7 is the highest common multiplar of both.

Divinding both top and bottom by 7 gives you 10/3, then an easier division gives you 3 1/3.

You would take the same approach to your other examples Kid.

how about this one

2 5/16 + 1 3/7

oh no I'm seriously gutted that I got the last bit wrong (not immediately dividing my 70/21 by 7). Ah well... that history of art degree was useless...

2 5/16 + 1 3/7

37/16 + 10/7

259/112 + 160/112

419/112

ok, someone else can reduce that

Rhubarb · 08/11/2005 21:32

2

Shazzler · 08/11/2005 21:33

Dh says

3 41/61

Dh says

3 41/61

JoolsToo · 08/11/2005 21:33

3 and third?

Shazzler · 08/11/2005 21:34

Which is nearly 3 2/3

philippat · 08/11/2005 21:36

tee hee

kid · 08/11/2005 21:37

we have worked it out so far to 3 83/112 which you can't change to 41/61 can you?

DH said sorry he can't add 35 and 48 in his head!!!! He got 82/112.

tit

soapbox · 08/11/2005 21:42

Philippat - when you are doing whole numbers and fractions, I think it is easier to just add the whole numbers (i.e. 2 +1=3) and then add the fractions, (5/16 +3/7 = 41/61) then add both together to give 3 83/112.

It saves you ending up with a huge fraction to decompose when you know what the whole numbers are anyway!

Shazzler · 08/11/2005 21:43

Dh agrees with soapbox!!!! Who obviously can add.

soapbox · 08/11/2005 21:46

Oops sorry - the middle step was cribbed until I realised it was wrong - so final answer is right but middle bit should read 83/112

philippat · 08/11/2005 22:02

d'oh!

do hope your nephew has a better day tomorrow, kid. Did a bunch of virtual women helping with his homework make him feel better or worse?

kid · 08/11/2005 22:05

I didn't tell him I was getting help on the internet , he must just think I am clever to know all the answers

OP posts:
philippat · 08/11/2005 22:07

well that will make him feel good, hopefully
