...send someone a goat!!!

Morning Mums!

I'm Izzy, 1st time mum to Lily (12 weeks old this Thursday).

I'm quickly realising Christmas is around the corner and no chance I'll be shopping much as I'm struggling just to make make time to chat on the computer...

In any case, we feel so blessed for our baby Lily that we want to make a difference this year. So if you feel the same, and you don't know what to offer to friends and family who already have it all, I strongly recommend the following site: www.practicalpresents.com

You buy gifts on behalf of your family &, friends, for families in the third world - a goat, a beehive, a fish cage, etc. - a long-lasting solution to feed themselves and/or generate revenue.

A chance to give to those less blessed in life...

No shopping, no wrapping, no complaints!

Thta's my tip of the week!
Izzy

What a good idea!

Bomper · 08/11/2005 10:14

Hmmmmmmmmm sounds like advertising to me.

NomDePlume · 08/11/2005 10:15

I'm sure luckylaydee has posted before on other threads. Does sound like an ad though.

luckylaydee · 08/11/2005 11:00

Most sincere apologies if my suggestion was 'strangely worded'.

OFF WITH MY HEAD for sharing my idea of doing something generous for xmas...

Did you not notice how many disasters there's been in the world this year? Do you not think it's normal that having given birth to the most wonderful little creature I feel incredibly lucky and want to give some back?? And yes I am trying to get as many people to support my chosen charity so that it makes a real difference.

Bah humbug to you.

Clearly I'm not worthy of this 'mums' group. I'll go find some less cynical mums to chat to...

Thanks for your kind welcome though.

NannyL - thanks for your support and hope to chat to you on some other site!

It does seem genuine site. I phoned up and did a 'phone order. The tip came just in time as was racking brains what to get my ma who is 63 and has everything she could want already, also I don't live near her so it had to be something that could be posted through the letter box.

Luckylady am guessing you work in advertising, as I have never read a post like yours before.

luckylaydee · 08/11/2005 14:54

actually Las Vegas, I work in sponsorship and events management, mostly in motor racing.

and of course it's a genuine site!

geez. you'd think I was trying to sell big macs and Nike trainers to 6 year olds.

IT WAS JUST A SUGGESTION FOR XMAS GIFTS!!!

I'm new to all this but I must say I've never had such heat for just saying what I feel - especially something so positive.

I've discussed this option in other groups and no one has ever been offended by it - just came back with their own suggestions - Oxfam, Fairtrade, etc

So much for the christmas spirit!

If its not an advert then maybe you should consider a job writing them cause if it was an advert (not that im saying it is) then its a well written (i dont mean grammer and spelling although it looks fine to me) and its a nice idea too.

MissChief · 08/11/2005 15:02

can get a goat etc from oxfam , also for those you don't like, a toilet!

handlemecarefully · 08/11/2005 15:12

I've had quite a few alternative christmas gift catalogues through from Oxfam and the like...thing is, if I bought my dh a goat (for the 3rd world) for Christmas, I'd get a look of blank incomprehension.

I personally wouldn't mean receiving an alternative gift like this though ...but you do have to be careful who you get them for.

My preference is to give frequently and generously to charity (mostly 3rd world as it happens) and buy actual gifts...

handlemecarefully · 08/11/2005 15:12

I meant, personally wouldn't 'mind'

luckylaydee · 08/11/2005 15:31

Thanks for the suggestion HuggyBear - nice to know I've got advertising skills if I want to recycle myself.

Just goes to show - here's me trying to do something good and charitable after working 10 years in the shamefully commercial world of Formula 1 racing ... and I end up getting trashed for it!

Anyway. Still think it's right and a good thing, whatever the cynics might think.

Of course you'll get some blank stares if you offer someone a goat for xmas - especially as they ain't even getting the goat! But that's the whole point - time to educate people a bit...

I'm not saying just offer that as a gift as it won't be very exciting - especially for kids! But for 10-15 quid you can make a difference for someone in the world and it makes for a more meaningful xmas stocking gift.

I think you are being a tad oversensitive luckylaydee

handlemecarefully · 08/11/2005 15:43

Don't think anyone has actually trashed you or your suggestion (have re-read the thread a couple of times). You'll need a thicker skin if you're going to post on here more often

Willow2 · 08/11/2005 15:44

luckylayedee - please don't get upset. We Mumsnetters try to be a nice, warm bunch but we are very defensive of our site that is run by lovely people who make a couple of quid a decade from it. That is why we get a bit uptight if we spot something that we think might be "hidden advertising". FWIW, I think the goat thing is a cracking idea, particularly for someone like my dad who is impossible to buy for, has everything he could ever wish for and donates a sum to charity each Christmas instead of sending out cards. Personally, I think he could afford to send cards too, but that is another matter FWIW again, even if this is an advert in disguise I'm not that fussed as it is all for a very good cause - and I'm sure the humanitarians at Mumsnet Towers wouldn't be that bothered either. (Well, maybe they would. Am sure they will speak out if needs be.)

handlemecarefully · 08/11/2005 15:46

Oh and incidentally I take your point, if you buy and alternative gift in addition to a conventional gift, it's likely to be better received....

handlemecarefully · 08/11/2005 15:47

In fact, okay, I might just do it this year

bsg · 08/11/2005 15:47

I agree with handlemecarefully. a tad!!! very.

luckylaydee · 08/11/2005 15:49

ok, point taken. just felt like i'd done something horribly wrong.

I'll try to change my writing style from now on so that it don't come across as advertising...

well done luckyladee for posting the link, and well done for sticking up for yourself on this site. We all need to be supportive of people who post on this site and not flame them for giving a tip or asking for advice. Keep it up luckyladee. Thanks for the tip, going to look at the website now as I'm stuck on several people this year.

handlemecarefully · 08/11/2005 15:53

luckyladee - just re-read Willow2's post....

handlemecarefully · 08/11/2005 15:53

just a genuine misunderstanding.....

luckylaydee · 09/11/2005 11:09

Morning mums

Now I don't want to open this can of worms again and promise this will be my last post on the matter but thought after all that I'd at least give you the right URL for my famous goats, since I noticed I got it wrong....

It's actually www.practicalpresents.ORG

Not such a great advertiser after all, am I??

Happy Wednesday to you and love to all x
