Tall 10 yr old DD, size 7 adult shoes, help!

Hello

there must be someone else out there who has similar problem/situation. My DD is year 5 at school, so her class age range is 9-10. She's oldest being an October baby. She's also tallest, 155cm, most developed in bust area, and is fairly sensitive, her closest friends are not in school with her.

Specific problem is Clarkes shoes, we managed to get school shoes for her size 7F feet, but they checked the catalogue and they don't make girls sandals in her size. The Clarkes age 9-13 bootleg range stops at size 6 in sandals. We eventually managed to find rufty tufty sandals at Millets, but I wondered if anyone had any other suggestions, tips or comments please?

Also, I got her some jeans in M&S sale, age 13 to fit her long legs - she's 3cm below age 13 size, so no point going smaller age 12 as no wear in that (152cm) at all. Length great, but even with elasticated waist, massive for her slim athletic shape. Anyone help with this please? We don't do 'sexy' clothes for her, so what are our options, where to look?

Thanks for reading, henwoman

Have you tried petite adult ranges...I have a ds who is 11 and 5"1 and it is hard finding him clothes (size 7 shoes). It does make it harder to find good clothes but if you search H+M, Next online (stock more sizes online) or GAP and other petite ranges (xsmall for men) you can get some..could she not be a short leg size 8?? Worth a try.

Hotter do good sandals- some quite "old" in style but also good plain ones. Good for support & growing feet- they have a mail order catalogue & shops. I know they are an adult brand but they do a variety of width fittings and half sizes on the entire range, IME as good as Clarks if not better.

Thx madhattershouse

I got her some size 8 regular skinny jeans they were in charity shop, so nothing lost - great fit on the leg with turn-ups look kind of funky! I have however had to put 4 darts in round the waist and looks odd round the bum. Luckily she's not yet too concerned about how her bum looks, and likes the skinny jeans fit.

We're also a TV-free house, so not too much pressure from visual/commercial world... not looking forward to secondary school, think things will ratch up a notch then... Will look into your other suggestions, thx.

I have two tall slim dds. They wear adult shoes in plainish styles, trainers or converses.

Jeans are almost impossible. Primark, H&M and Tammy girl are my first choices as they sometimes have jeans/leggings to fit. Adult leggings in 6/8 work, too.

DD1 is 5'7" (almost 12yrs) and wears jogging bottoms or jeans. DD2 is 10 and can't get jeans slim enough and won't wear with a belt/taken in as they aren't comfortable, so wears leggings.

Here's a link to Hotters sandals-

Meant to say I also saw a sizing guide on the homepage so you should be able to get quite a good fit even online. Hope this helps.

Next!

Their girls' shoes ad sandals go up to size 7 in most styles.

At that age I was in adult clothes and shoes chosen appropriately...

If you can afford it there is children clothing which goes until 18 yo, like "petit bateau", "kickers", "campers", "converse"... without being too naff.

Also try H&M, Zara, top shop ... They all have teenage sections where you can find not too OTT clothing.

My dd is 13 and has the same height/slenderness issues - she's just hit 5'9". I've found that Next shoes do well for her, but clothing has to come from adult ranges in any shop we can find that will fit her.

nooka · 08/05/2011 05:56

My dd is also 10 and just over 5'. She is now in adult ranges only, both clothes and shoes. Her feet are the same size as mine (UK 8) and she recently grew out of the age 14 clothes that seem to be the top of the children's range here (I live in Canada). We go to what dd calls 'teenagers' shops (I think I'd probably be looking in something like Jane Norman in the UK) and the only problem is nice tops as the things that appeal to her are all cut for busts and she hasn't really started to develop. I recently bought her two pairs of size 24/32 jeans and she looks fabulous in them (I couldn't fit any of the range, so am a bit jealous!)

foxinsocks · 08/05/2011 06:52

Yes my dd is 10 and the same height (slightly taller) and wears leggings rather than jeans. She wears them with long tops or dresses.

We got some lovely summer dresses from m and s that are not tarty at all but had to get age 13-14.

Uniqlo do nice t shirts in xs or s that will probably fit your dd.

As for sandals, did you look at the adult clarks? They have quite a lot of summer sandals in brighter, more child suitable colours? Or have you thought about crocs? Dd loves hers and you can get them in any size. She has a type of pump/Mary Jane style croc.

hello all

thanks for all the input - I've been stupidly busy since I started this thread, typical. It's nice to know I'm not the only mum with this challenge!

I just looked on another thread about pre-puberty signs, and hopefully they're going to ask mn hq to start new title/topic for 'puberty', as there seems to be a jump from about age5 to teenage.

You'll probably hear more from me there! ;)

Good idea. It would be nice to have a puberty section (I've two pre-teens).

I could have written this a couple of years ago. My dd, now 14 is 5'8" and now wears a size 8 1/2 or 9 shoe. She has been wearing ladies clothes since she was 10ish. It was a nightmare getting her a posh dress for her school leavers dance. Styles are so tricky as you don't want them to appear "tarty". We recently discovered Pavers shoes which go into large sizes. DD isn't really into sandals as she prefers canvas plimsole type shoes in the summer. We get these from New Look which goes up to size 9. They are quite good on the clothing front too as they have sizes small enough, trendy styles but still discrete enough for pre teens to wear.

fyrtlemertile · 22/05/2011 21:14

My niece is a little older but she buys a lot of stuff from hollister as their 'adult' sizes are very small. Try these t-shirts which are crewneck and bright colours and the jeans go down to a 23inch waist I think. It also has the advantage of being 'cool'. While I hate to say it my nieces who are just 12, 14 and 15 would not be caught dead in those hotter sandals... what about toms, flip flops of sandals from primark?

jan8read · 23/05/2011 22:52

As a 6' mum with a 13 yr old daughter at 5'10 and size 9 shoes and 15 yr old son at 6'4 with size 12's - believe me I know all these problems and trust me they get worse as they get older, since they desperately want to be a part of the fashion scene but get disappointed when they can't find the sizes they need and yet all their friends have got the latest look.

I think Next offer a good choice with clothes and have a tall range that go down to a size 8, we devour the Long Tall Sally catalogue which also do a limited range of shoes. E Bay is always good as many tall people know how hard it is to find clothes and you can always find odd bits through them by searching Long Tall Sally in womens clothes.

I know the age range maybe a bit beyond this thread but hope this helps other mums too??

dobby2001 · 23/05/2011 23:00

Aah some kindred spirits! Although my DD is the youngest in her yr5 class, not ten until August. She has just been measured as size six in shoes and has been wearing age 12-14 year clothing for a while now (depending on which brand)

However we have an additional problem in that as well as being very tall and big footed for her age, she is also carrying some extra pounds, in particular around her middle. Have spoken to our practice nurse as I was concerned, she is very concious but nurse has siad it is pre pubertal "puppy fat" effectivley and she will grow out of it. To be fair she has always got chubby before a big growth spurt but as most clothes seem to be for kids that just go up and down, having one with curves who is still nine is tricky to say the least!
