spouse visa to move to Australia and nurseries in NSW

We are in the process of getting an Australian passport for ds, and then we will start to fill in the form for my Australian visa. Does anybody know if a medical/and the police check are compulsory? The whole thing is so tedious and expensive!!!
Also will my ds have access to free nursery (2/3 hours per day like here in the UK) in New South Wales? He will be 3 then.

When we went in 2000 I applied for a spouse visa but it took so long - longer than the then supposed wait of 4 weeks- that I almost missed my flight. Then the couriers who were bringing my passport back failed to deliver it here on the Sat am so I did miss my flight....

Anyway, upshot of that is that I was told by the visa agent who eventually sorted it out for me that I should have just gone in on a tourist visa and applied whilst I was out there. I did get the police check cos I though it was necessary but I'm not sure it was.

We were in Melbourne and DD then just 4yo went to Kinder for 11 hours a week over 3 sessions. It wasn't free though although not particularly expensive either, maybe $100/per term including a voluntary fundraising levy. Parents were also expected to take their tunr on a working bee which helped maintain the Kinder premises, garden and equip.

Great news about the nurseries! I thought I needed the spouse visa, must investigate further. What a bore! Must not put it off otherwise we will end up not going anywhere. Hate forms and forking out money!

Hello lewislewis. I came to NSW 3 months ago. Whereabouts will you be? I'm in Sydney and couldn't find a nursery place, most nurseries in the Eastern Suburbs are booked until 2007. If you are in this area then start looking (and praying!) now. I think it isn't so bad outside of the centre of Sydney though.

When I applied for my visa I had to have a chest x-ray and DD had to have a medical. I had no police check but lots of references were taken for me and DP.

My dh came to Aus on a spousal visa and it required a fairly comprehensive medical which is compulsory - there are also only certain docs that you can go to for the medical - he had chest x-rays (aussie govt big on TB), dh also had to have a police check. Your medical is valid for one year so if something delays your journey out here then should a year pass from when you had your medical til arriving here - you will have to have the medical again. It is tedious and expensive BUT well worth it. Although the migrant agent told Sue to come on tourist and change over - immigration are getting very tough on people doing that.

Our dd1 is three and she will attend Kindergarten next year at a C&K kindy which is about $14 a day. There really is no provision for 'free' nursery/kindy. The government does provide some childcare rebates that people can qualify for. Kindy is two days a week for my dd1. She will attend from 9 - 2.30pm. I think C&K is only on QLD but there is probably a NSW equivalent.

G'day all

I came on a spousal visa, and yes the police and medical checks are compulsary. My visa took .... 5 working days to come through. But then we live in WA and they do let anyone in here, well almost anyone. those with no criminal records or TB, hence the police and chest checks.
But then they'd probably have consumptive jewel thieves in Bunbury

Thanks for this. We are not sure where we will stay in Sydney, not in the Eastern Suburbs though. I have resigned myself to doing a medical,
Sydney better be good. Pinotgrigio are you still enjoying the city or are you pining for home?

Are you in Bunbury Suzywong? We went there when visiting friends who live in Floreat (in 2002) and saw dolphins. Lovely.

pinotgrigio · 07/11/2005 05:02

Hi LewisLewis. I love Sydney, thanks for asking! I'm so pleased I came.

suzywong · 07/11/2005 05:11

no I'm not in Bunbury, I was being irreverant and a little bit rude; Bunbury is a backwater within a backwater.

I am in the swinging metropolis of Applecross in Perth

I loved our trip to WA. Friend is married to a local girl (he's BRitish). They might be coming back though.
