for glorifying Terrorism...........well lets face it what Guy Fawkes was going to do would be classed as an act of terror these days wouldn't it???

Well that's what DH and I were casually chatting about this morning

It's ok, QoQ, we're pretending to burn him at the stake, again. We're not approving of him.

We probably could get in trouble on some incitement to religious hatred laws, though, what with the whole anti-catholic thing.

HRHQoQ · 04/11/2005 14:38

ahh but we're "celebrating" his attempt to blow 'em all up - we're not celebrating the day he was dragged through the streets and killed in whatever manner they killed him.......

But you're right we'll probably get done on that account too

Given the fact that they used to burn effigies of the Pope rather than Guy himself, I'd guess the point is to celebrate victory over terrorism - but my parents always used to joke about Guy having the right idea!

madmarchflare · 04/11/2005 14:44

that he was stopped HF.

WigWamBam · 04/11/2005 14:46

Isn't bonfire night supposed to be celebrating the fact that he didn't get away with it, not the fact that he did?

Caligula · 04/11/2005 14:47

It's also historically been a huge anti-Catholic celebration. I can't see how burning effigies of the Pope can be considered anything but anti-catholic, really.

NotQuiteCockney · 04/11/2005 14:55

It is certainly an anti-Catholic celebration.

I always like the saying: "Guy Fawkes, the last honest man to enter parliament."

Caligula · 04/11/2005 15:02

So I guess this might be the last one where effigies of the pope may be burned without fear of prosecution.

Ah well, the passing of an era. I guess we'll just have to start burning effigies of Darren Day. Surely something the nation can unite around.
