i'm lowtech.

i saw an advert on the telly last night which advertised a toshiba laptop and they mentioned "watch live telly" soooo... can you actually do this? Can anyone direct me to a sight with info or where you sign up? Is it real telly where you can flip channels and watch things in real time?

And..

If i travelled/moved abroad, would i simply be able to open the laptop and start watching UK telly? (maybe for a charge)

Sorry DaddyCool i cant help you with this, alas the only live telly i found on the computer on a bit of a snoop was darling boyfriends porn!!

munz · 03/11/2005 14:33

DH is asleep - sure he'd know

bubbaloo · 03/11/2005 14:39

I've actually got something put in my pc that allows me to use the screen as a tv,so can watch BBC1,2,ITV,C4 and C5.Not sure if this is what you mean though.

DaddyCool · 03/11/2005 15:44

you all suck . i'm afraid there will be hell to pay (now... how do i pay out hell?...)

nope. i'm trying find a facility where that i could just open the laptop abroad, log into the site and watch a full range of UK TV.

For instance, i would like to go to say, the sky site, log in using a password under a paid subscription and watch tv and channel hop just as I would a normal telly, through a high speed broadband connection.

Is this a reality do you think?

Think you're dreaming DC

Unless someone else knows different??

Wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't happen soon tho but I bet it'd be expensive

iota · 03/11/2005 16:06

is this any help?

Carlk · 03/11/2005 16:10

Ok my knowledge on this is sketchy so forgive me any mistooks.
Yes it is possible.
I believe the newest version of windows, Windows Media Centre is specifically designed to do just that. As for sites, well, there might not be any yet but there will be, and you can expect the major media corps, sky/bbc/itv etc to run some kind of subscription service soon.

that's excellent. thank you.

so, this isn't a complete reality yet. the site iota provided lists websites according to country which do provide some feeds which are specific to a tv channel (most obscure ones). but it's interesting and i'll have a play with it.

CarlK's info seems to say it all and answer my question. not a reality but watch this space because it's bound to happen, i guess.

we can watch TV through the PC.
We have like afreeview card in it so we can watch all the channels.
Hardly ever use it though, except for recording and putting on to DVD.

DaddyCool · 03/11/2005 16:45

but can you use it abroad, away from your sat connection or cable?.. and flick channels just as you would a normal telly?

do you get all the big channels like BBC 1 2, ITV, ch4 and sky1?

OP posts:
littlerach · 03/11/2005 16:49

Don't know about abroad.
Yes, you get all the channels that you'd get with Freeview, inc BBC etc.
I flick through the channels as you'd normally do, it is just like TV but on the PC. We got it mainly to record onto DVD. Think it gets recorded onto the harddrive, then put onto DVD. I know that SIL in LA is able to download whatever we record, from our PC. We record Eastenders for her and she downloads it.

DH thinks u need a tv card, works as an antena??

bubbaloo · 04/11/2005 10:52

I've got a tv card but need an aerial to watch the programmes.Might just be because my pc is a couple of years old, though.

MunnziesDH · 04/11/2005 14:55

You wont be able to get channels which you pay a tv licence / monthly fee for (BBC1&2 / SKY 1 etc) without a TV card

However a quick Google and I have come up with these DC ... most (if not all) you will have to pay a one off fee to use the software and I don't know just how many / what channels you would get, but still might be worth a look...
