Film Ratings - What does 12a actually mean?

Does anyone know? Ds (8) wants to see the new Harry Potter film when it comes out, but it appears to be a 12a. Someone has told me that although it is rated as a 12, it is up to parents discretion if they take a younger child, and someone else has told me that it means it's slightly worse that a 12. Anyone ideas?

"12 with Parental Guidance - 12A means that the BBFC have classified the film unsuitable for children under 12. However they may still watch the film, as long as they are accompanied by someone over 18 at all times during the showing. Advice is given regarding the content of the film and the ADULT must decide if it is appropriate for the accompanying under-12"

Has he read the books Bomper? My ds1 is also 8. Up until now we have not allowed him to see any 12a films - Revenge of the Sith, Lord of the Rings 2&3, etc. But he's read Goblet of Fire about 5 times, and all the other HP books as well; so he is well prepared for the plot and action. So I think it is less likely to be so scary for him.

Having said that this book (the 4th) is much, much darker than the others; and you do need to think carefully about whether it is appropriate for your children as individuals. (We won't be taking ds2 - 6.5).

Thanks for the advice. Ds has seen all the previous HP films, and is currently reading 'Chamber of Secrets'. However, we allowed him to watch the recent series of Dr Who, which he loved, and when he got the DVD it was rated 12. Perhaps, I should see it first, and make up my mind then.
