Will we be fined £80 now ??

The certificate hasn't arrived today and they have debited the money either so I think there is a prob, dp needs to ring when he gets home.

I was meant to go get the tax today but I can't without the insurance certificate can I ?

No, I mistakenly took in my insurance schedule rather than certificate last week and they wouldn't do it. Had to call insurers for certificate and it took about 4 days. Thankfully got it done over the weekend. I do think there are so many days grace where car tax is concerned though no idea how many.

JanH · 01/11/2005 11:33

They stopped the official 14 grace days a few months back although I think there are still unofficially a couple - nutty, when was your cover note sent?

nutcackle · 01/11/2005 11:33

Ahh right, hopefully we will be ok then.

Will get dp to get onto insurers straight away.

Don't you have a Cover note? this should be issued until the Certificate comes.

Ring the insurers NOW to find out, explain that the car needs taxing.

Is the car actually on the road at the moment?

nutcackle · 01/11/2005 11:35

Cover note ????

We stopped the car insurance when the car was off the road for 3 weeks. We had a falling out with the insurers cos the price kept going up not down and so we cancelled it.

Sorted new insurance out last week (friday i think) but no certificate yet.

Yes dp had to use it today for work.

He printed off the email from insurance company incase he got stopped, not that they would take any notice of it I spose.

Look, just ring the insurance company.

There is probably a cover note in the post now anyway. If the car isn't on the road today it probably won't matter, but could be a pain if a policeman spots it on the road, or if it's in an accident.

JanH · 01/11/2005 11:39

Just found this:

nutcackle · 01/11/2005 11:39

I will try and ring them, but it's all in dp's name so not sure they will tell me anything.

OP posts:
JanH · 01/11/2005 11:40

Are you a named driver? Our insurance is in DH's name but they talk to me!

nutcackle · 01/11/2005 11:41

I think I get that Jan. Basically if it is seen without tax in the 14 days then he will get done, but if in those 14 days it isn't seen without tax then the enforcement won't be issued.

Will try and ring insurers now.

OP posts:
nutcackle · 01/11/2005 11:42

No i don't drive.

OP posts:
Easy · 01/11/2005 11:43

Same here, I arranged dh's insurance for him, as a named driver on the policy. They should be able to tell you if they've sent a certificate/cover note, it's not as if you're asking about claims or premiums.
Tell them you know that the premium has been deducted. Tell them dh is at work and you NEED to know.

nutcackle · 01/11/2005 12:56

They won't tell me anything because I could be anyone apparently. Yeah right, anyone that just happens to have the right ref number.

They said to get dp to ring later.

ask J&RM - don't think she had hers for a week and didn't get fined??

BROWNY · 01/11/2005 13:06

Just wanted to let you know that you can pay for your car tax credit on line now, they check that the car is insured (automatically checks their data bases) and the as long as they have the correct details on the registration document, i.e. you live at the same address at on your registration document - you can pay on-line there and then. HTH

bran · 01/11/2005 13:06

Why don't you try renewing your tax on-line? They do an electronic check for your insurance so you don't need a physical certificate. You need to have a debit card to do this.

bran · 01/11/2005 13:06

Browny - great minds think alike

nutcackle · 01/11/2005 13:08

Unfortunatly we both only have crappy electron cards which they don't accept.

BROWNY · 01/11/2005 13:09

Bran lol.

Sorry it won't work for you!

auntymandy · 01/11/2005 13:10

do you not have a cover note?

nutcackle · 01/11/2005 13:11

No we have changed insurance companies after a fall out with old one.

OP posts:
auntymandy · 01/11/2005 13:13

sorry just noticed that!!!
Can you pop in to insurance place and pick it up?

nutcackle · 01/11/2005 20:17

Haven't a clue where it is, it was done through one of those broker thingies.

Dp rang them and they said the whole thing has gone through fine. He asked them why the money hadn't been taken and they said that because it is below £90 it accepts it as paid straight away and then it will eventually come out the back. Have never ever heard of that before and thats no good to me, if they are going to take it i need them to do it now because otherwise something else will go out and there won't be enough in there.

Anyway they said they had sent the certificate but have sent another just incase the first has got lost.
