does any one know if you need a motorcyle licence to ride a scooter? I have a car licence but don't want to be running a vehicle to work.

I think it also depends on how long you've had your car licence. I have a feeling that it's something like if you had a car licence before a particular date (no idea when) then you can ride around on a scooter or small motorbike (usually under 125cc but some 250s are also OK I think) with L-plates on indefinitely (after doing the CBT). But if you are a new-ish car driver, there is a time limit, so you can only ride with L-plates for a short while and then you have to take your test.

yes... I heard it was ok if your licence was pre-2001. Mine is. I must check it out 'officially'.

DP runs a motorcycle training school - will get the definitive answer when he comes in from bike tinkering in the garage!!

If you passed your car test before February 2001
you can ride any bike upto 50cc without doing a CBT or displaying L plates. If you want to ride anything bigger (upto 125cc)or you passed your car test after February 2001 you will need to complete a CBT which will validate the provisional motorcyle entitlement on your licence for 2 years.
Hope that helps.
