I think it's all in context isn't it? I mean Barbie is NOT a great physical role model, but then again she is NOT the only role model that young girls will get to see or be influenced by.
it's up to all of us to provide the balance I reckon.

edam · 30/10/2005 22:07

When I was a kid, Sindy was a nice girl and Barbie was common. Used to love dressing Sindy up. Poor girl never got to wear her wedding dress though because my mother refused to let me have an Action Man (no glorifying of war in our lefty liberal household, no sirree) so no wedding.

Amai · 30/10/2005 22:08

posh tart, frankly hate her movies.

frannykenstein · 30/10/2005 22:11

I just don't see why we can't have a normally proportioned doll instead of the freak that is Barbie. I mean, I do see why we don't, but it makes me rather sad.

edam · 30/10/2005 22:35

Well, if normally proportioned doll was based on me, she'd have a jelly belly, wobbly thighs and unshaved legs and probably frighten the life out of impressionable little girls. So best not, really. [grin[

with, of course, a feminist hat
(what does a feminist hat look like btw?)

Barbie, one of the things that makes me glad I have boys.

I wasn't allowed Barbie as a child but was allowed Sindy. I would and have bought Barbies as presents but only for children who I know have Barbies already, so presume that they must be allowed.

Hulababy · 30/10/2005 22:43

Can you imagine what barbie would look like if she was a "normally" proportioned woman? Wonder what age she'd be absed on then? And what "faults" they'd include - cellulite, saggy books, spare type, big bum, etc? Hmmm...wonder if she'd be so popular?!

expatinscotland · 30/10/2005 22:44

Sindy?! That sounds like a porno doll!

Hulababy · 30/10/2005 22:45

Sindy was a bit more "girl next door". Barbie was more of the tart!

edam · 30/10/2005 22:47

Buffy, red and vulva shaped with a pearl at the apex, I imagine!

expatinscotland · 30/10/2005 22:48

Hmmm. I lurved my Barbie. . Always thought Ken was gay, tho.

Tortington · 30/10/2005 23:07

BARBIE IS A SLUT cindy is the way to go. she's a good girl

soapbox · 30/10/2005 23:08

I think she's a two faced bitch. Girls that look like Barbie, always are IME

expatinscotland · 30/10/2005 23:09

Yeah, hellmouth. Cindy/Sindy's just one of those goody goody hooches whose Mum and Dad think she walks on water and that gives her the perfect excuse to get away w/being a shag freak. .

Tortington · 30/10/2005 23:22

god i spelled it wrong! i mean Sindy. Sindy at least if she were real would be a classy kinda whore.

Barbie is the Spawn of Satan.

Enid · 31/10/2005 09:10

lol soapy

I was anti-barbie I think at one point and now I couldn't care less. Dd1 bought dd2 a pink sparkly one for her birthday with wings, she loves it.

I agree with whoever said it was short-lived. Dd1 has summarily rejected Barbie in favour of horses, damn them for producing that vile horse styling head

she is a slut

NomDePlume · 31/10/2005 10:48

DD loves Barbie, despite any anti-feminist connotations. She likes Barbie because she is pretty, girly and wears pink. Fair enough, I say.

NomDePlume · 31/10/2005 10:50

If we all lost our heads about toys that were sexist, violent or just plain uneducational, then our kids would have nothing to play with !
