Stealing Grapes - how many is too many?

Just curious where you would draw the line...

Tasting on or two to see if the bunch I intend to purchase is not too sour/sweet for my taste is as far as I would go.

Zephyrrywitchescat · 29/10/2005 10:48

between me dd and ds we might have a maximum of 10!!

Thing is you can only eat as many as you can hide the stalks for

WigWamBam · 29/10/2005 10:48

1 is too many.

charliebat · 29/10/2005 10:49

2s too many the first will let you know...unless of coure its horrible and you have to go round all the bunches till you find the perfect one

dropinthe · 29/10/2005 10:56

I only buy the box with the price on already so the boys can scoff the lot if they want while we walk round-keeps then quiet!

magnolia1 · 29/10/2005 11:03

SO Soupy you WOULD Steal a grape then????
And there was me thinking you were far too well behaved

Nightynight · 29/10/2005 11:24

one is to see if they are sweet or not.

more than one is pushing it...

magnolia1 · 29/10/2005 11:29

Ah!!! But there is always some that are sweet in a bunch of awful ones, So you need 2 or 3 to make sure

Nightynight · 29/10/2005 11:34

for goodness sake - I never taste grapes anyway myself. Cant you tell from the colour/variety what they are likely to taste like?

magnolia1 · 29/10/2005 11:49

God no!!!!

You need to try a couple!!

Go on I DARE you

triceratops · 29/10/2005 11:49

I don't steal. Even from supermarkets. Even small things. It is just the way I was raised.

If I want to sample things before I buy them I would ask first. If I need to entertain my child I bring or buy something to entertain them with.

I used to work in Asda, it is amazing the quantity and variety of things people feel entitled to pinch just because they dislike the supermarket.

Nightynight · 29/10/2005 11:52

for white grapes, general rules are...
yellow, translucent = ripe and good flavour.
bright green = unripe and sour.
datiers can be sweet even if theyre green.

red globes are tasteless imo
small red grapes are sugary and tasteless

the dark blue ones that come from South Africa in winter have a refreshing flavour even if not very sweet.

thats my grape buying philosophy!

Nightynight · 29/10/2005 11:55

but triceratops, would you not feel cheated if you got home and found that the supermarket had foisted sour grapes on you? or do you feel that that is their right and you should just put up with it?

I think people have a right to know what they're buying. But eating handfuls of grapes is clearly taking the piss.

SoupDragon · 29/10/2005 12:02

Actually, no magnolia1. I don't buy grapes at all

You can always ask if you want to try one. There is always an assistant in the fruit and veg section so there is really no excuse not to ask.

They are always too sweet for me anyway, they send my blood sugar sky high, it is not remotely healthy to eat more than one or two in my opinion.

magnolia1 · 29/10/2005 12:19

pmsl!!! at this thread

There is not always an assistant let me tell you!!!

Have had to search many a time to ask something!

Not gonna run half way round a supermarket to ask if I can try a grape

SoupDragon · 29/10/2005 13:24

Who remembers the Jamie Oliver ad where he stuffs himself trying bits at the Sainsbury's deli counter?

OP posts:
Nightynight · 29/10/2005 13:33

there is also ones dignity to consider. Im not asking some 17 year old YTS if I can try a grape, and then they tell me "No!"

Seona1973 · 29/10/2005 15:20

dd quite often takes a snack to the supermarket and it is usually grapes and breadsticks. When she finishes them she always asks for more grapes and I have to admit I pick a few for her and put them in her snack pot to keep her busy for a bit longer.

I also agree that there is never an assistant about in the fruit/veg isle but I still pick the grapes furtively and sneak them into her snack pot while looking about feverishly to check no-one is watching...lol

ladymuck · 29/10/2005 16:13

Was in Waitrose Sanderstead yesterday with the ds's buying fruit - and yes, it included grapes. Both ds's wanted to eat some then and there, but I explained we were going to pay first and they could have it in the car. Ds1 then said in a very loud voice "But THAT woman is eating them and SHE hasn't paid yet" - at a 50 year old who seemed to be chomping through several bunches in search of the right taste.

I assume she was too old to be Soupy!

hallowcarla · 29/10/2005 16:16

When M&S were selling their cherries at that phenominally high price I asked permission to try one first. I'm so pious

Lucyfercat · 29/10/2005 16:17

as many as dd can get away with and it also depends on how long the shopping takes _ I have absolutely no qualms about ripping Tesco's off!

GeorgieVickyLou · 29/10/2005 16:29

Do you think they'd mind if you try other fruit to see what it taste like..

twirlaround · 29/10/2005 16:36

it's all theft

GeorgieVickyLou · 29/10/2005 16:37

Yes it is.. LOL
