How long is he staying for, Bloss? And what sort of accom would he expect? Sounds enough for, say, a fortnight in a nice B&B, if such can be found. If he wants top hotels/centrally located apartments or is staying longer then he probably needs more.

Check out lastminute.con - they have lots of deals on London hotels at the moment.

Bloss, £2000 will NOT cover him for a whole month in London unless he dines out at McDonalds every night. If he is lucky he could bag a room at the Travelodge within the former County Hall, which is the cheapest decent quality hotel I know of in Central London, but when I was putting up some Estonian visitors on a similarly tight budget a few years ago I found it immensely hard to get acceptable accommodation for under £100 per night.
He might want to consider a B & B in a pleasant suburb such as Twickenham, Kew, Blackheath etc. We moan about transport but travelcards are still economical....He could also look for accomm near a university campus in the capital as they often have at least one acceptable B & B nearby, for parents at graduation time.

Bloss, when we first moved to London 2 years ago we stayed in a B&B in Hampstead which was £70 a night and I'm sure they would greatly reduce for a long stay as it is now approaching quiet season. I know that I know the name but can't remember it at this precise moment so if you're interested I'll find the name and find the number. It is only a 5 minute walk to the tube, does good food on the premises and there are also at least 10 pubs/restaurants serving good food within a 5-10 minute walk.
I would agree that £2,000 is pushing it to get acccommodation, feed yourself, travel, etc. If you work on £60 per night then practically the whole budget has just gone on accommodation. Even £50 per night doesn't leave him a whole lot to play with.
Let me know if you want the B&B details.

Bit strange that they're sending him on a conference in a foreign country but not organising his accommodation?
