Help! Does anyone know how to undo these??

I've just had a new set of wheels for the pram. The new set have a screw and nut which is easy enough... but the ones already on there have a funny thing that i can't undo! On one side it's a round flat shiny bit (like the head of a screw but no groove) the other side is a little round thing - looks a bit like you could undo it with an allen key but its just round, not hexagonal so nothing will grip it. Does that make any sense??!

Anyone know the trick to getting them off?

What pram is it ??

Zephyrrywitchescat · 26/10/2005 11:38

It's a marco sky but these little things are on also on my maclaren and another cheapie stroller we've got. I'm currently attacking the cheapie one with a screwdriver and pliers to see if they do come off!!

Hmm not sure what else to suggest.

nutcackle · 26/10/2005 11:41

Not that I actually suggested anything

Zephyrrywitchescat · 26/10/2005 11:42

Very difficult without seeing it
but you may find the round shiny one is a sprung fastener that can be levered off with a large screwdriver. If you insert said screwdriver between the cap and the wheel and it moves but doesnt come off then it will probably prise off.
If all else fails cut it with a hack saw (hard, slow work) or drill the head off the one with the hole (fairly tricky to do for the first time)
can you post a pic of the old wheels?

nutcackle · 26/10/2005 11:42

Had a look on my Maclaren but can't see anything like you've described.

Zephyrrywitchescat · 26/10/2005 11:43

I'll go and take a pic .....

Sounds like a protective cap to me, which I think is what BorisCarlkoff is saying. My DH had these over the nuts on his car a few years ago, and ended up calling out the garage because he said that he couldn't get them off - he too thought that they were the actual nut rather than just a cover!

Zephyrrywitchescat · 26/10/2005 12:04

ok - hopefully you can see it here

There's another pic at the side that shows the top...

The round bit in the main pic is not attatched to the washer under it but I'm trying to wedge a tiny screwdriver inbetween and under the washer but it's just digging into the metal!

Is it a trick of the photography, or do they actually dip in rather than stick out?

Zephyrrywitchescat · 26/10/2005 12:15

they go in! So there's no way of getting hold of anything or sticking anything in!

Again it isnt totally clear fron the pic but I think these are factory fitted like rivets, the hole in the one end is where they press-fit the item. I would drill it off but I'm not sure that this is a job for the unexperienced. You will need a "good quality drill bit" a bit bigger than the shaft if the fitting(the nuts for the new wheels should give you the idea) a variable speed drill or two speed . and a method of holding it all still Like a vice on a bench.
when drilling metal wear safety glasses and use a slow speed.

If you live near Brum I could do it for you

borisCarlkoff · 26/10/2005 12:18

IN inexperienced

Zephyrrywitchescat · 26/10/2005 12:26

Hmmm.....have got a drill and bits but not a vice or goggles so prob best I don't try it that way. Unfortunately I'm in Southampton but thanks for offering

Is the company that you bought the pushchair from local to you? I would have thought that they should be able to take them off for you for no charge?

Zephyrrywitchescat · 26/10/2005 12:40

They're miles away too! It has been through about 3 mumsnetters before me getting it!! My next plan is screwdriver and hammer to see if i can knock the top off!!

Do you have a friendly bike shop near you? (A small one - not Halfords). They may be able to help you. My db used to have a bike shop and would fix prams and wheelchairs occasionally

borisCarlkoff · 27/10/2005 11:35

ZWC you'll be much better off trying to cut them off with a hacksaw than hamerring away at it I dont think it's possible to do that without damaging the metal struts
