damp spot in the bedroom

i've noticed some mould and condensation on my bedroom walls so i have strpped the wallpaper, bought some anti-fungal paint, dehumidifer? and some paint for bathroom/kitchen which i plan to use in the bedroom. so far so good but i have been looking on line and most of the websites say this is a waste of time and should buy their expensive equipment. has anyone came across this problem and found a solution?

do you know why the damp is there? For instance have you got a leak?

mumofelise · 25/10/2005 20:39

i live in a flat and seems to be a problem in flats like mine. everyone else i know bleached the walls and moved house. not an option at the moment

i would give what you've already got a try before buying anything too expensive. most important thing to do is check how the damp is getting in and see if you can do anything about it from the outside to stop it, otherwise it may come back. is it an external or internal wall?. if its external, sometimes it can be down to something as simple as broken or blocked guttering.

mumofelise · 25/10/2005 20:44

the problem is on my external walls but i'm on the ground floor and the problem areas seem to be near the ceiling. no ovbious reason

Had similar in a flat years ago but it turned out that their was a leak from a pipe above. Don't want to alarm you but I'd perhaps get it looked at just to confirm that it's no worse than you say otherwise all your good intentions will be for nothing. Is your flat factored? Is so, the factor would be a good start if so.

I also have a damp patch in my bedroom at the moment and despite paying a small fortune to some git of a roofer, it's still there and I've no clue where it's coming from

mumofelise · 25/10/2005 21:11

i own the flat but is is factored. i'll give them a call. thanks

you need to find out why it is damp first. If it's a leak then obviously that needs to be fixed.

At this time of year, a lot of mildew/mould appears because it's starting to be much colder outside and the inside of the house is much warmer (so the warm, moisture filled air hits the colder walls and condensation appears). If it has only just appeared now, then this could possibly be why.

Is the outside of the flat painted in weatherproof paint? Do you know what room is above you (is it a bathroom/kitchen)?

JanH · 25/10/2005 21:45

Do you dry clothes in your bedroom or do anything else that might generate moisture?

We have a v small shower room with low ceiling and that is always accumulating mildew on the ceiling and the tops of the walls because certain people don't open the window.

You can tell if the damp is coming from the room or the wall by sticking a small piece of glass to the wall with blutack, so it's sealed all round. If condensation appears underneath it's the wall, if on the surface it's the atmosphere in the room.

What a great tip JanH. I'll remember that

foxinsocks · 25/10/2005 21:59

yes, that's a great tip - had never heard of that before

JanH · 25/10/2005 22:07

I got it from a DIY book

(Have never tested it btw but it sounds as if it will work!)

WitchyWhizzz · 25/10/2005 22:09

If you plan to paper over it & want to hide the patch - you can get special paper that you use as a backing under the wallpaper - almost like tin foil on one side which is good.

bubble99 · 25/10/2005 22:16

I so want to post a for mumofelise's bedroomy damp spot. I haven't had one of those for a while.

But I won't, because it would be crude and childish.

Whoops, I just did.

JanH · 25/10/2005 22:17

(Have to say that did cross my mind too )

Lucyfercat · 25/10/2005 22:20
