stbhl I have to do it for dh as he is a plank when it comes to gifts

Zephyrrywitchescat · 25/10/2005 16:07

snap doormat!

wallopyCOD · 25/10/2005 16:08

not me
i do it

lilibet · 25/10/2005 16:09

The thread title made me think "who else makes........'

Wouldn't dream of making my dh do anything!!

As he wouldn't with me!

He buys them/his side all presents cards, we discuss what we are buying and may be together when it is bought but I would never go out and buy his aprents a present.

Similarly, I wouldn't write their cards.

Adn in years to come I will be very pissed off if my daughter in laws take over form my soms when it somes to presents! I'm their mum they can get out there and get me something

doormat · 25/10/2005 16:11

lillibet he will write the cards out, I have to put it in front of him first and put a pen in his hand

scotlou · 25/10/2005 16:12

Tend to do it jointly - I buy everybody elses and then for his family I will nag him until he comes up with ideas. If there's time we'll buy their resents together - but he is really fussy and will traipse from shop to shop and back again whereas if I see something I think will suit I'll just buy it. So much quicker if I do it myself! (I do all the wrapping too as otherwise it would never get done)

startingtobehalloweenylover · 25/10/2005 16:13

pfft well i have no qualms about making dp buy his! then if it's crap at least i don't get the blame

Good grief, no, it's up to him if he does it or not. They're his family.

Bozza · 25/10/2005 16:16

But to be fair to oliveoil who started the other thread her mil does do her childcare 3 days a week for free. So I think thats partially why she started that particular thread - she wants to make sure plenty of thought goes into the present to show her/their appreciation.

I buy/write for DH and I think my MIL expects it. Occasionally DH will buy (depending on what it is) but I will still wrap and write.

lilibet · 25/10/2005 16:21

WHen I got married the first time, I took on all the buying of cards/wrapping of presents for his family, at the time 9 people.

When our third child was due at Christmas, I asked ex to shop for his side.

Result = his mum and dad got marks vouchers and no one else got anything. His choice and I lived with it. We got nothing off any of them the following year!

motherinferior · 25/10/2005 16:23

But why do you do it? It honestly wouldn't occur to me.

startingtobehalloweenylover · 25/10/2005 16:24

yes i just wondered because a lot of people seem to (my mum included!)

i thought i was weird getting dp to buy his own parents presents! lol

lilibet · 25/10/2005 16:25

The first time I thought it was a 'wifely' thing to do

Now I'm older and I have more sense!

Adn once again I would never dream of making him do anything!

motherinferior · 25/10/2005 16:26

I occasionally try and make DP do stuff but it is more on the tidying up front

CountessDracula · 25/10/2005 16:29

makes? He does it himself voluntarily!

startingtobehalloweenylover · 25/10/2005 16:29

lilibet... if i never made dp do things then he wouldn't do anything!

of course i could be very "wifely" and do ALL the childcare, cooking, cleaning and shopping... but that's not really much fun

MI cos dh is useless at all presents
evne the kids
it pains him to shop
i liek it and am much better at it than him so i do it

binkie · 25/10/2005 16:34

Funny though, there's a sort of cascade -

as in, his parents - v likely not;
his brother - no probably not but we'd discuss;
his sisters - would mind a wee bit if he didn't consult w/ me;
his brother & sisters' kids (our nieces and nephews), definitely a shared one.

And vice versa, except that I detect a tiny bit more interest from me in his siblings' kids than his in mine. But it's minimal, & when you're talking er 17 kids is it not that noticeable. (Everyone under 10 is getting a set of posh colouring pencils with its name on.)

motherinferior · 25/10/2005 16:37

I find presents stressful enough to sort out from my end.

binkie · 25/10/2005 16:38

MI you could try our concept of everyone gets the same - one year it was those supersharp parmesan graters.

We got a rather puzzled thankyou letter from my Pa.

iota · 25/10/2005 16:42

dh buys for his side of the family - -and he buys most of teh presents for our kids as well -- he loves to shop

wallopyCOD · 25/10/2005 16:46

youd find watching my dh struggling worse MI
