i so don't need one of those... been to ikea today for necessary purchases of junk.

wilbur · 25/10/2005 17:21

When I get more cupboard space in the kitchen, I will be getting a waffle machine immediately. I bought shop made waffles for celebratory breakfast after ds2's arrival and they were rubbish.

My mum used to love browsing in their fabric dept when we were kids and I remember db moaning that "you know it is really possible to die of boredom". I like all their embroidery gadgets and threads etc and their baby gear dept is super.

puff · 25/10/2005 18:28

wilbur - sooo spooky you should say that about Peter Jones. My last "girlie" shopping trip with my Mum was to Peter Jones to buy her outfit for my wedding. She never bought expensive clothes and she was like a child excitedly rushing about in there, it was one of the best days ever to see her so happy.

She was dead 3 months later, but I've been back in since to sort of relive the memories.

I worked in the JL when it opened in Glasgow but only for a few months as the whole ethos was a bit patronising. Plus the manager of the department I worked in was a bully!

I was always astonished at the mark up on the stuff as we got to see the actual price (I worked in the back rooms, doing admin rather than on the floor but we had to do sales every so often.) There was one customer who phoned up the department next to mine screaming down the phone that their bed had been delivered straight from the suppliers and she paid for JL so she damn well wanted a JL van to deliver. That was about the norm in customer demands as well!

They make you pay for your own crappy uniform as well as the fact the pay is really bad so the bonus is just to bring you up to a living wage. SIL went for a job there after I started and she was offered £8,000 for full-time sales assistant in the kitchen dept!

lucykate · 25/10/2005 20:28

never really been a big JL fan, always found it a bit expensive

wallopyCOD · 25/10/2005 22:02

the waffle maker is fab
the fact that it sdoes 8 finger shaped ones is its usp

stripey · 25/10/2005 22:10

they will price match so if you find another product cheaper in another shop they will reduce their price so e.g the price of a TV can change day to day. We bought ours their with a great deal and a 5 year warantee for free.

ladymuck · 25/10/2005 22:14

I thought that they had discontinued they "never knowingly undersold" policy - or is that just in London?

PrincessSmartyPants · 25/10/2005 22:17

Partners have green blood.

bosscat · 25/10/2005 22:32

oh Wilbur that is really moving and I know what you mean. I'm always looking at obviously newly wed lovelies with their lookalike sheila hancock mothers choosing liberty print curtain material and thinking "why the hell isn't my mum buying me curtains?"

wallopyCOD · 25/10/2005 22:34

lol at sheila hancovk

Somebody said that in case of nuclear attack they'd head for Peter Jones, because you know nothing really bad could happen to you there.

wallopyCOD · 25/10/2005 22:37

yes wilbur htink thats almost the most understatedly moving thing i have ever read on here

still think of you when i read winnie to ds2 though

wallopyCOD · 25/10/2005 22:38

ladymuck · 25/10/2005 22:46

Hmm if you tried Peter Jones schoolwear department I would say that absolutely nothing will happen to you there at all. Certainly no sales.

ditto love it - customer services brilliant.

magicfarawaytree · 26/10/2005 08:43

esp for baby stuff - we all know how flimsy pushchairs are and jl very good at after customer services that some baby suppliers are not.
