WTF? DH's credit score BETTER than mine!

DH defaulted on a 5k bank loan about 6.5yrs ago (6mths before we met), among other loans too. Cut a long story short but he was only able to get a bank account 2 yrs ago coz his credit rating was so bad!!! He has never repaid any of the defaulted debts.

We are trying to buy a house (currently everything is in my name) and I've been at him for a year to re-apply for his credit score as the advice from a Solicitor was that time is a great healer when it comes to credit.

I got sick of waiting so I applied for his! Frighteningly easy to do by the way!!

Couldn't BELIEEEEEEEEEVE it when his score was 920 out of 1000!

His score is fantastic! No debts showed up at all! I know that after 6yrs the debts tend to drop off your credit file, but I thought he would still have a bad credit score!??

No?? Does this mean we can get a joint mortgage now?

My score was about 830. Can anyone help?

WOW really, might apply for mine and see what I get cos my credit history is awful, sounds pretty much like your dh's.

I didn't know that debts drop off after 6 years. What do they do, just write them off then ??

Nemo666 · 25/10/2005 11:46

sorry i know its not why you started thread but how did he manage to not pay them back?????????????????????? Going through debt collection myself at the minute and they are ruthless about getting every penny.

FangAche · 25/10/2005 11:47

Nutty - I was under the impression that no company ever searches back more than 6yrs. So they may still be there, but people don't search on them. I, therefore, assumes that they would still affect your score, but wouldn't be glaringly obvious on the file.

So you only put in your addresses for the last 6yrs.

CCJ's definitely get dropped after 6yrs.

GO FOR IT!!

Yeah I was also wondering that Nemo.

I do know though that when our house was repossesed a few years ago, I had debts with about 3 cataloges and 2 credit cards. They all wrote to me after I said i couldn't pay, saying that they wouldn't try and claim the money until i started working.

I have since had a bank loan and the one credit card company took the money they were owed straight from my account when the loan went in. They had used a thing on my account to notify them of when I had enough money to pay them.

Nemo - He had no kids/house/responsibilities. They arrested his earnings so he quit his job and moved flats! Idiot!

His friend gave him a job cash in hand at the pub he ran (that was how I met him).

He was uncontactable until we met. He saw a Solicitor who advised him to resurface to the debtors, writing a letter saying HERE I AM! That way they would chase the debt and he could declare himself bankrupt.

They never ever answered the letter the whole year we were in that flat. That was 5yrs ago.

Bump

Does anyone know how final that score is? I don't want to apply for a joint mortgage and then be financially connected to DH if this could be a false impression?

Did you use both Experian and Equifax to get your scores because my friend checked hers the other day as she was refused a credit card for the first time ever. Her score on Experian was high but then when she looked on equifax they seem to go back further with the information they require and therefore her father's debts in a house she lived in years ago were effecting her score. It's best to check your score with both companies because people will either check both or one of them when assessing your applications and both companies can hold different information.

FangAche · 25/10/2005 12:47

Thanks Edodgy. I only checked Experian as I know that Halifax (who I've just had a mortgage promise from) only check with that agency.

I'll try Equifax anyway.
