Learning to drive - is 1 lesson per week enough? (empty purse)

I was in the park with dd yesterday and suddenly felt very fed up and lonely as I now live miles away from all my friends (I moved to live near MIL and cheaper area so I could work p/t) and thought it was high time I learnt to drive.

I did 2 lessons per week last year for about 4 months but gave up when my pregnancy bump got in the way. However, we are now on a budget so I don't think we can afford more than one lesson per week.

Anyone else learnt this way? Don't think it is enough personally but feel the need to do something, anything.

The only time dh and I argue is in the car so there is no way he can instruct me! (car is also automatic).

Driving practice in between lessons is really important. Driving isn't just about controlling the car - it's about "road sense" and a lot of that comes with experience.
I failed a driving test because I was over-cautious due to lack of experience. The examiner actually said that there wasn't anything fundamentally wrong with my driving, I just needed more practice. My bro on the other hand passed first time after a couple of lessons - but he had been driving a (large) motorbike for many years.

1 lesson a week should be ok. That's all I had, no practice in between and passed within a year. I did fail the first time though!! If you do fail the first time you have to wait ages before you can apply for another test. I don't know if this still applies, but this is waht I did and took my second test within 2 months: as soon as your first test date comes through apply again and they will send you another ,slightly later date, without cancelling the first one. If you pass your first test just cancel the second date. Hope it still works like this. Good luck!!

Bozza and Angeliz thank you for your encouragment. I'm 5'1 and a half and it's been years since I was behind the wheel of a car. I'm sending off my application tomorrow and I think I should have it back within a fortnight give or take a day or two.
anyway I'll do that then organise lessons and see how the bump goes with regards to how long I keep up the lessons.
I'll need to be very organised to fit in lessons around work and dd's school anyway. It might even be easier to do lessons while on maternity leave, but I'd really like to learn to drive before next year or at least get a start on it.
