Where in the UK can we go to escape fireworks?

Not that I don't like them but dd2 is only 7months and not the greatest sleeper at the best of times, and judging by past years there will be fireworks going off all night long around here.

Wondered if anyone knew of anywhere we could escape to for the weekend that would be either firework free or else limited fireworks (ie. remote country cottage).

A small island of the west coast of Scotland maybe?

IlanaK · 22/10/2005 22:01

central london. There are no back gardens so you don't have that problem. Although there are big displays in the park, they are far enough away not to bother.

Northern Ireland only celebrates halloween so most of loud bang nonsense is finished by 31st october.

SerahScarer · 22/10/2005 23:25

I'm off to the Peak District for the fireworks weekend - a farm cottage where the nearest neighbours are a few fields away - it was more for the dog than the baby, but I think she has the other cottage still up for rent?

That said, I haven't been before - she says it is quiet - and I suppose compared to the "Beirut" I currently live in it will certainly be an improvement!

dinny · 22/10/2005 23:27

cinderelly · 23/10/2005 00:40

ScarySkribble · 23/10/2005 00:56

We had the big morters going at 1:30am the other night and the dog next door went daft.

We do get some for the 5th only and do it at MIL's because neighbours dogs are gun dogs and not bothered.

Loads of remote cottages up here though where you won't hear anything. Like these apartments and cottages at Culzean Castle £180-£220 for weekend.

ScarySkribble · 23/10/2005 00:57

Meant to say culzean is only about 25mins from AYR so not too remote, still got 24 Tesco fo nappies .

ScarySkribble · 23/10/2005 01:01

Heres one of my pics of Culzean, can you tell I like it here .

We have loads of fireworks around here, for weeks. Is Eid soon? Or something?

At any rate, both boys have white noise machines in their rooms, so the fireworks never wake them up. They still annoy me intensely, though.

dinny · 23/10/2005 07:44

it's Diwali. And Eid too, I think. Loads of fireworks last night (Tooting). Why so late - they were going off at 1.30am! Who could be arsed staying up that late (esp if Eid/Diwali as no booze imbibed!)

kuoni · 23/10/2005 08:14

As someone who has seen them on sale but has yet to actually hear one go off at anytime of day or night, recommend rural gloucestershire
But then, I guess it will all start up soon enough..
Personally, I love them and so have my mids from early age. We make sure the cats and dogs are safely housed away in room with radio on quietly etc. Even when children were very small, they loved the fireworks. I guess we are very lucky as fireworks night means "night" not "nights on end" and also means a few small displays in peoples back gardens followed by the one larger one organised by the PTA, complete with good old fashioned steaming mugs of soup, toffee apples, home made fudge etc. Always held in small penned in field so all children free to roam around with friends as everyone can see everyone easily - all over by 9pm.. Got to say, times like this I don?t regret moving out of the city at all..Ok - will stop feeling smug and shut up now
For all of you suffering from firework abuse, hope it all ends quickly and without any unpleasant incidents, it sounds horrendous.

IlanaK · 23/10/2005 11:31

Ah - eid and diwali! I was wondering why I could hear an enormous organised display last night in central london. It was driving me mad! (not the firewroks as they weren't that loud, just that I couldn't figure out what they were for!). Thanks for clearing that up!

Blu · 23/10/2005 12:45
